Well, it's about time....
I'll do a weigh in tomorrow morning (even though I started the diet today).
I'm getting married later in the year, and would like to lose as much weight as possible for the wedding/honeymoon.
Right now I'm going with the reduced calories, no bad foods, no caffeine, exercise when I can approach. I've got almost this whole year to work with, so I'm trying this for a month and will see how it works out.
I'm thinking piece of fruit for breakfast, protein bar or can of tuna (no mayo) for lunch, salad (small amount of lite dressing) for dinner - and not a huge salad with lots of bad stuff in it either.
As far as exercise...slow to start. 20 minute walk 3-4 times a week, working up to jogs and runs (once I start getting a bit more back in shape).

Good luck to you!
May I suggest a little protein at breakfast? The straight sugar shot that is a solo piece of fruit can leave you pretty flat at mid-morning.

I suggest High Intensity Interval Training. Takes about 15-20 mins. It's not that hard and works a lot better than jogging for fat loss.
And Eat meals like those, but 5 times a day. To lose weight you should eat small meals (a couple hundred calores) 5-6 times a day.

Depends on how much time you have and what your tastes are. I usually go with some Cabot 75% reduced fat cheddar, but sometimes have reduced fat peanut butter or a couple of slices of turkey bacon.
I have that along with a high-fiber carb (kashi go-lean crunch, Thomas' multi-grain light english muffin, high fiber toast or mini bagel or kashi go-lean waffles) and a piece of fruit.
A handful of pistachio nuts or your protein bar could also do.

I agree that smaller, better meals are better. I'll bump up number of 'meals' a day.

oh yeah, I do need some fiber...but I can't stand it, so I was thinking just fiber pills
while a protein bar would be easiest (especially since I could eat it on my way to work), I don't want to live on protein bars.
revise:
protein bar on the way to work
piece of fruit midway between arriving at work and lunch
can of tuna for lunch
_____ an hour before leaving work
salad for dinner
if you have any suggestions for a healthy idea to put in that blank, I'm more than willing to listen

Google HIIT and you will find many things.
Mine goes like this:
5 mins warm up
30-45 secs HI
1.5-2 mins rest
30-45 secs HI
1.5-2 mins rest
30-45 secs HI
1.5-2 mins rest
30-45 secs HI
1.5-2 mins rest
....
....
5 mins cool down.
(The rest is "active rest". i.e. jogging)
See:

These tables are a little different than what I do though. It should give you an explanation of how the process works.
I do 4-5 intervals.

Apple slices with peanut butter.
Or a banana with peanut butter if you get tired of apples.
Also good: a cup of lowfat yogurt, mix in some strawberries
This diet still seems awfully low in calories. You don't want to dip so low that your metabolism shuts down.

I can't stand yogurt, but bananas are good
what exactly am I looking at in terms of calories for like an apple and orange as the two fruit items, can of tuna, peanut butter (with the apple), protein bar (peanut butter flavored power bar is what I'm thinking), and salad with lite dressing?

I can't vouch for authenticity - but try this site: www.calorieking.com
Says an apple is 80 calories, 85 calories for an orange, 191 for a can of light tuna (packed in water), 188 calories for 2 tablespoons of peanut butter (tablespoon is bigger than you think ;)). Protein bar, probably 200, though depends on brand. Two tablespoons of a light dressing (no fat) runs 15-25 calories
I'm not a calorie counter, though I'm leeching a little off of my g/f's weight watchers stuff. I don't think I could ever do JUST a salad for dinner. I like some substance (I eat dinner at 6-7 pm with a 10 pm bed-time).

I did a similar diet and it worked. I think the main issue for me would be variety. Sounds like you are gonna be eating tuna everyday for lunch and a salad every night for dinner? Sound boring and would definitely get me to jump ship quickly.
It really depends on where you are too. Are you looking to lose those "last 10-20 lbs" or do you need to lose more than that (40+)? If it's the 40+, getting quick meals like Lean Cuisines and Lean Pockets (lunch?) will help with variety, and can easily satisfy w/o tons of calories (and if you're looking to drop a lot of weight, i wouldn't be TOO concerned with the preservatives and additives in this stuff).

For example, today, which is a perfect example of a 'regular' day for me (second day of diet, but I'm going to do this long-term). Breakfast (6:30 am) = 1 1/4 cup Life Vanilla Yogurt Crunch (I'll eventually ditch these types of 'fun' cereals with something a little healthier like Total) with 1/2 cup skim milk, 1 banana. Mid-morning snack, 10:30 am - 1 banana. Lunch, 1:00 pm, left-overs from last night's meal (we cook enough for six total meal portions for the two of us, or two leftovers sessions per meal) which my g/f made - 1 cup cooked whole wheat spaghetti, 1/2 cup meat sauce (sauce, ground turkey, chopped green and black olives), a good sized ziplock bag of chopped celery and carrots, and 3 tablespoons of light ranch dressing. I have an apple and a 100 calorie ritz snack mix in my desk drawer for sometime between 3 and 4 pm for another snack, then will eat meatloaf for dinner when I get home.
My main issues when eating are - I NEED variety. Every day, I have to eat something different - we always have three different sets of leftovers in the fridge (good fridge ;)) and do most of our cooking on the weekend. We have frozen dinners, lunch meat, lots of veggies and fruit.

I'm about 5'7" and I was 160 most of high school, and despite playing both spring and fall varsity sports (tennis and soccer), when the fall sport ended, I started gaining weight. I was about 180 by the end of high school.
I did intramural sports in college soccer and softball until I blew out my ankle really bad and the strength was never the same. That, coupled with college eating and drinking, I was up to around 215 by the end of college. I think I'm now around 225 as I've basically been eating more as my fiancée and I live together and I'm getting larger meals made on a regular basis (plus, as a nurse, if I wait and we eat together when she gets home for a 12 hour day shift, it can mean eating at 9 pm some days).
As far as a target, I would love to drop back down to about 175 (I was too skinny at 160 if you ask me), but I would be happy with 190 if that's all I got to.

If he's doing a one month thing, then I suppose it's doable, as long as he has a plan to keep the weight off. I once went from 205-175 over the course of three months (summer break) through a lot of running and a cut down diet, but I ballooned to 215 by the holidays. This time around, I want to get back to 175 (from 225) and stay, even if it takes two years.

if it takes 2 years, I guess that's ok, but 10 months would be best...hey, a pound a week is a rate at which you can maintain AND keep it off....roughly 40 weeks and 40 pounds would put me around 185...which would be a fantastic start

But I would be wary, as it's usually the pared down meals that lead you to scrounge around when you shouldn't. I'm going to definitely stock up on celery sticks, baby carrots, uncooked broccoli, etc., and light ranch dressing (20 calories, no fat, for 2 tablespoons, which is plenty if you don't slather it) for those odd cravings.
My main change this New Year's is that I'm NOT going to buy my lunch at work, ever, and I'm -NOT- going to even bring $20 spending money (like I usually do) for the odd snack or soda. That's what killed me this past year.

I hope it's quicker than two years, but I'm just going to make sure I eat right, and exercise a good thirty minutes a day. Last time I did this (early summer 2006) I lost 10-15 pounds in a month. Then I stopped the diet, then I stopped the exercise, then I regained the weight.

it's hard for me to give any advice - since I only know what's worked for me. But I was extremely overweight (150lbs+) and only interested in calorie cutting - quickest weight loss; not really "eating healthy" per se.
This year I told myself to start "eating healthy", while pressing towards my goal weight (which is about the same as WA's - 190). 2004 and 2005 were good years for me (lost about 50lbs in each - tho diet really only lasted from March to Sept of each year; rest was maintainence...), but 2006 I regressed (gained about 20-30 :-/).
I still plan to include "fun" foods - like sweet cereals and lean pockets/cuisines for variety (at least until I move in with the gf and have someone to share a meal with).

We unloaded ALL of our holiday candy and cookies, etc., at the NYE party we went to (of course, the host probably ended up throwing most of it away). I also drank too much, so I ended up with a not-so-pleasant beginning to the new year, but oh well ;) At least I didn't eat too much yesterday (since all I could handle before noon was plain toast ;))
G/f's also dieting and exercising. DEFINITELY helps.

alright, that morning and afternoon snack are going to be very important...right now I'm starving having only had an apple and a can of tuna all day....luckily, I can plan better starting tomorrow

That's been my problem to date - I need some substance with my meal.

I'll try not to walk up the court...but the first few weeks I might be like that at the end of the game...

'official' weigh in this morning was 225...
my fiancée is off today, so hopefully she'll get around to getting the rest of the dieting food.
given that we only had one apple left and no other fruits in the house, my day is split up with 4 meals today.
two teaspoons of peanut butter (low fat peanut butter is on the shopping list) for breakfast
I'm going to wait longer for my morning snack and have the apple and peanut butter about an hour before my normal lunch time
have my can of tuna about an hour before leaving work
and my salad for dinner
I always heard that it takes your body 20 minutes to realize your full, so the small meals are working out ok. I still feel hungry initially, but a little bit later, I feel full and I'm glad I didn't keep eating.

You might want to spread that on a Thomas' or Pepperidge Farm mini-whole wheat bagel.
Or one of Frenchie's "Alternative Bagels" in white if you absolutely can't stand whole wheat (though I've found that whole grains taste much better as you get used to them. I didn't care much for them at first, but now I prefer them to white.)

In theory it's just mushed up peanuts. If he's eating all-natural peanut butter, then I may see your point. Peter Pan or Jif is not the same as eating a handful of nuts.

I thought one goal for healthy eating/living was to recognize your body's own cues, so you eat when you're hungry (not starving, of course), and not because there are external/social indicators (such as a clock) that "it's time to eat now." Am I completely wrong on this?

That's the way I plan on tackling it. But any trainer will tell you that you should have 5-6 small meals a day (opposed to 3 "normal" meals a day). I think it may take a few weeks, but eventually your body will get used to it and you'll feel "hungry" at those times.
I was never hungry at 11:30am, which is when my co-workers from my last job wanted to eat. I eventually gave in started eating with them. 2 years later - my stomach starts to grumble around 11:20am.

I had the same reaction, since this is certainly what I am trying to do for myself. I think what I would do is plan the meals and snacks I want, but not plan what time I will eat them at....just listen to my body. The exception is before I work out...I have to eat something small and carby even if I don't really feel hungry, because otherwise I feel faint (typically have low blood sugar by the afternoon). For now he should just experiment and see what works best. If he isn't used to eating at regular times it's not a bad idea to get used to doing so.
I'd be careful about forcing yourself to eat if you aren't actually hungry though....that is such a valuable signal that so many dieters have repressed over time since they're always hungry. In looking back at my many dieting attempts, I wish I would have snacked more when I actually felt hunger. I think it would have been better for my metabolism. Also, what happens if you have a meal that is bigger than your planned one....especially don't have the snack if you aren't hungry then.

I try to go by this and only eat when I'm hungry. My stomach usually growls around 10am, so I always have healthy snacks in my desk. But on the off day that I'm not feeling hungry before lunch, I skip it. I figure that's about 100-150 calories saved. No use eating it if I'm really not hungry at all. And I don't really find myself eating more at lunch because of it.

Then you should eat. I can't remember what the scale is exactly, but they say you should gauge your hunger on a scale of 1-10. If it's a 9 or 10 (completely starving) then you've waited too long to eat. If it's 6-8, you should eat. Or something like that (the Weight Watchers people may know what the rule is).

The trick is to also eat slower...another one of my problems.
Just because you are eating less calories doesn't necessarily mean you will be hungrier. You may have been consuming many "non-hungry" calories after your body was satisfied.
Say you're used to a ham sandwich and pretzels for lunch...eat about half a portion of each (or whole portion of one, and nothing of the other) over a period of 10-15 minutes, and wait 10-15 minutes. You may find yourself not even wanting the other half of your meal (which, in the meantime could be saved for your mid-day snack until you adjust to a quantity).

I drink 4-5 bottles of water during each work day...the dizzy spell was about 5 minutes into playing bball...so I doubt lack of fluids was the cause
plus, I had some more water just before we started playing (i.e. after shooting around waiting for everyone to show up)

Yeah no, I'm way off, nevermind. I don't know if it was food though. On the days I play ball, the last meal I eat is lunch around 12:30. I can't eat before I run around because I feel sick, so I skip dinner and eat after I get home. Since I don't play until 8, I go a good 8 hours without eating, and I've never had dizzy spells.

That is very low and could very well be causing you to get lightheaded. My dad had the same problem when he went on a diet - he hardly ate anything all day long and was complaining that he felt weak and lightheaded. I told him he needed some calories for energy! I've heard you should never go under 1200 calories (unless instructed to do so by a doctor) because anything less will kill your metabolism.

I didn't think about that. Even though i eat way earlier, I still could have enough calories to last me. To be honest, I have no idea how many calories I take in per day. I just checked, and breakfast alone was 240, and I'm having a loaded hamburger and some type of macaroni salad for lunch. That, combined with the random snacks throughout the day, I'm assuming will boost me well over 1000.

No wonder you're feeling lightheaded! My trainer keeps emphasizing the importance of eating enough during the day before a tough workout. I tend to eat a fairly light lunch and then forget to snack, and my workout suffers. I've found that a dose of about 200 calories of carbs an hour before my workout is perfect. A piece of fruit and some wheat crackers. Your body needs carbs if you're going to be out running around!

It's not enough carbs and too much protein and fat. The protein and fat takes longer to make it into your blood sugar, so it sits in your belly while you run around rather than giving you energy. The apple is good though, but probably not enough by itself. I used to think eating nuts before working out was good but discovered that it isn't.

Once again, based on my limited knowledge, the general rule is carbs before a workout and protein after. The carbs give you the energy to get through the workout, and the proteins help rebuild the muscles after a workout.
Edit: Not carbs from sugar though, that's fake energy.

Yeah, I think I knew that once and forgot it. I get mad at my trainer when she gets on me about calorie counting, but I love her advice about how to maximize my workouts.

dude - you need to be eating at least 50% carbs for your body to make it, and if you play sports, it needs even more carbs, since that's it's most direct source of energy.

thank you...I'm quite happy with my progress even though I splurged a few times with dinner at the future in-laws (small portions of tenderloin, mashed potatoes and green beans) and the following night when my parents got chinese for us all as we were putting them up an extra night and driving them all over the place. I only ate around half the chinese as my form of portion control.

hopefully. I'm 'playing' basically the whole time we have the court, but then again, there are times of walking. I'm hoping I can get very active again. I didn't play last week, as the normal group played on another day when I was not available.
Honestly, I'm kind of shocked at how easy it's been so far. Just diet change has resulted in 16 pounds coming off in a month. I know it will get harder, but I'm really looking forward to seeing a "1" as the first number in my weight. :D

It's "bittersweet" when I lose weight and have to buy new clothes. On the first two legs of my weight loss a few years back, I had to buy new clothes every few months (i hate clothes that are too tight or too loose - an inch or two is too much). It was "annoying" (in a good way, obviously) to spend hundreds of dollars over again...but obviously the reason was good.
When I was dedicated (which, unfortunately, doesn't seem to be the case now), I told myself to buy cheap "replacements" because they would need to be replaced in a few months, and whenever i reached my goal weight - to replace all the "crappy" clothes we quality clothes.
Maybe one day I'll eventually reach that goal instead of walking around in k-mart khakis

finding khakis that fit right is hard, so I basically only wear dress pants...
jeans are hard too, but I finally found jeans that fit well, but I have to pay more for them...Guess jeans fit well...

Same here. For dress pants, I always used to buy them about 4-6 inches too big in the waist for the extra thigh room and have them altered. Sadly, I now fit into the originals just fine. :( Looking to change that though. Many pounds to go though.

I've always heard that splurging earlier in the day is better because you have the rest of the day to work it off. I splurged at lunch on Saturday, but then did quite a bit of walking on Saturday afternoon and had a small dinner, so I didn't feel as bad.

just general logic will tell you that big meals (good or bad) for dinner or late in the day is bad, as your body is starting to slow down and store the food...that's why my dinner is usually my smallest meal of the day in terms of calories

just general logic will tell you that big meals (good or bad) for dinner or late in the day is bad, as your body is starting to slow down and store the food...that's why my dinner is usually my smallest meal of the day in terms of calories
I just heard a great conversation in the elevator, that reminded me of this conversation.
Woman #1 (sounding shocked) : Did you know that some people say you should eat a big breakfast, a medium lunch, and a small dinner?!
Woman #2: Really?! Why?!
Woman #1: I don't know!
Man #1: Well, they do say breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Woman #2: They really say that? Why?
Man #1: I don't know.
Geez people. I know we can't all be nutrition experts, but have you been living under a rock?! :)

I bought a pair of Under Armour Extreme Cold running pants, and 2 Nike shirts. Haven't used them yet since I haven't run in anything colder than about 33-35 degrees. Works well, huh? Hope so. Running in weather in the teens doesn't excite me otherwise.

I will have to look into thin (but warm) gloves and something for my head as well. I got these from Dick's Sporting Goods and think they're great. The gloves are pretty thin, and has a small pocket in the palm for a house/car key, if you need it. Like I said, I'm surprised what a big difference they make in my comfort level when I run.

I haven't been running much at all, but generally I've been more active (although Rock Band might change that)...
was trying to decide what to wear today and I pulled out a pair of pants I forgot I had. a nice pair of banana republic khaki's that my wife had gotten on clearance a few years back...the tags were still on them since the waist size was rather small (at the time I was a waist size x and these were x-1...for the $10 they cost she figured she would just get them)...I had been as big as x+3, but sure enough, these x-1 size fit with no pocket bulge...
I've been eating like crap again, but something is working right...
oh, and the weight is sticking around 195...so I must have redistributed some weight
