View Full Version : MrsFrog hops off the pounds

It's a new year and time to get back on the bandwagon.

I lost 10 lbs since June, mainly through running, and would like to take off around 5 more to get back to college weight(I think I never really weighed myself in college), and the college size(6). Exercise is not an issue I run quite far several times a week in preparation for a half marathon next month. I also am a swimmer(as all good frogs should be) and when it gets warm enough, March or so, I'll be back in the water.

My main issue is food, I love food, and have almost no self control. I also love to cook and bake, but MrFrog doesn't like sweets much so if I bake sommething I usually end up eating all of it.

My daily plan is to eat more veggies throughout the day, and stop having a midafternoon candy/cookie snack that never leaves me satified. Overall I need to make sure that eating and drinking doesn't interfere with working out, and to not totally ignore my health the month before my exam when MrFrog usually takes care of what's for dinner and we have something like hotdogs.

I'll probably use this thread to record when I've been really bad or really good. Like yesterday and today where 4 out of the last 5 meals I've eaten had bacon in them, and the 5th consisted of salt and pepper kettle potato chips and a glass of cranberry/pomegranate juice...

Go, you skinny frog, you! :)

How long ago was college? I've found out that size goals are misleading, due to size creep. I've been at my current weight 3 times. Once in HS, once in the late 80's, and now.

In HS, I was a size 8 at this weight. In the 80's, I was a size six at this weight. I was sure that when I hit my goal weight, I'd be a six again. Turns out the former six is now a four.

Better to go with what looks and feels good to you than to go for a size. Best of luck!

Boy, do I hate that Nurtrisystem girl who goes around chirping "I'm a size 2, I"m a size 2!"

Thanks Mainiac, That's one skinny frog in that picture

College ended 5 1/2 yrs ago, I stayed about the same size(read could fit into the same clothes) for 3 yrs but once I became a Mrs. I gained a little, and stuff started not fitting. Then end of 05 and first half of 06 I gained about 10 lbs more. I want to wear that stuff again, or at least fit into it.

I hear you Frog. I have no self control either and absolutely am obsessed with food. I found the only way to control myself is to not acknowledge its existence. That means it just cannot be in the house...ever. When you go to the grocery store, never even walk down the isle that has chips and snacks. And run by the ice cream cooler without stopping. After several months, you'll adjuist

Already off to a bad start, dinner with the inlaws was last night. We had suggested a tastey mexican resturant that I knew had some healthy options(grilled shrimp skewers, vegtables and rice). But inlaws vetoed in favor of a steak place. I had looked up the menu beforehand to find only one chicken dish that started with grilled instead of smothered, only to get to the restaurant and see they don't have that on the menu, argh. so I had a 6 ounce steak instead...

Also, due to doing a home improvement project Sunday and Monday my abs feel like someone punched me under the ribs, and I haven't run since Saturday. Will run tonight though

A Life - I'm pretty god at the gocery store, partly b/c I never go in without a list, and partly b/c I know I can't keep stuff in the house, it's the recipes I want to try and the cookies I want to make that are my downfall

A 6 oz steak isn't that bad. It's the loaded baked potatoes and the bottomless breadbaskets that will kill you at the steakhouse.

I hate that girl too. And for the record, I think she looks bigger than a size 2. :)

Actually, a six oz. grilled steak is not that bad. A little heavy on the saturated fat relative to chicken or seafood, but way better than ground beef items, or items smothered in sauces or fried in fat. Don't beat yourself up about it. (Sounds like the DIY project did that for you!)

(edited: Lone Girl beat me to it, but it's still true. :) )

First weigh in post holidays:145.5

Not bad, I didn't gain anything. I think my official goal will be 137. I want to stay under 140, and this will allow for some holiday/vacation pounds.

I'm running 12 miles tomorrow and my goals after that will be to
1) not eat everything in sight as a reward for running 12 miles
2) study for a few hours
3) help MrFrog complete the home improvement project

This may be a little ambitous since it's hard to study after running that long(really it's hard to just sit for that long) and the home improvement project is alot of up and down and bending over. We'll see how it goes

Day early weigh in 144.5

I'm glad it's in the right direction, I didn't really run much this weeek due to a head cold. And I managed to eat a whole pizza by myself, over 4 meals but still that's alot of pizza. I bypassed the goodies downstairs this morning, but probably b/c I was excited about my weigh in.

Maine-iac

Good job! Yeah, it's a lot of pizza, but pizza is reasonably healthy (well, except the pepperoni/hamburg/sausage toppings), and your ability to spread it out over 4 meals is fairly impressive.

I like the Digiorno thin crust harvest wheat frozen pizza. I figured out if you cut it into 9 squares, you can have 3 pieces for less than 420 calories (and alot of times, just two will fill you up). It makes a really filling meal and 420 calories isn't bad for a whole meal. I put the rest in the fridge and reheat throughout the week.

1/18: I toggled between 143.5 and 144, we'll say 144(since I'm drinking a cappacino, which I don't normally have)

I'm pretty shocked and amazed at the direction I thought for sure I would have gained weight this week. I haven't run in a week due to weather, and I've been eating pretty bad, but I think it may just take a while to catch up. So in a few weeks when I hit a plateau I should remeber that I didn't run this week, and blame that and not get discouraged.

I need to stop eating pizza too, I had an entire frozen pizza in 2 meals, however MrFrog did cut the pizza for me and handed me half, so It was hard to not just eat the 2nd half the next night. I think I am going to try to convince him to cut it in thirds

Alright I'd been doing sooo good this week, Monday I held out all afternoon when I was sooo hungry(I ate my snack at 1:30 and had planned to stay until 7 to study) And Sunday I didn't snack at all. But yesterday I caved and had a good sized chocolate chip cookie, then MrFrog wanted to go out to dinner, we went to a place that had a $10 bottle of wine Tuesday night special!!!! So of course I had half a bottle of wine with my dinner of what turned out to be a giant spinach calzone, which I of course finished. Wine must make you more hungry. Today won't be much better since the lunch place I'm going serves huge portions that don't box up well.

I've actually read that you tend to eat more when drinking alcohol, because alcohol loosens up your inhibitions, and that includes your inhibitions when it comes to eating. Instead of trying to be "good" and hold out all day without a snack, maybe you should eat a healthy snack with lots of protein. That'll keep you from feeling starved by the time you do eat, and you'll be less likely to overeat. And remember at lunch today, just because the place serves stuff that doesn't "box up well", that doesn't mean you have to eat the whole plateful. ;) It's perfectly fine to let them throw out half of your entree!

Maine-iac
01-24-2007, 11:53 AM
There are strategies.

- Any salad luch options? Soup?
- Leave half on your plate (I know, it's difficult to get past the idea that you are wasting food, but its worth it in the long run.)
- Split an entree with a fellow weight watcher?

And Lone Girl is right again. Keep healthy high fiber/high protein snacks handy, and have one when you are hungry, rather than holding out until dinner, at which time you are so hungry that portion control goes out the window.

My personal favorites for snacks:
1. Cabot 50% reduced fat cheddar bar or mozarella stick and a low sodium V-8
2. South Beach Diet High Protein Cereal Bar, Cinnamon Raisin or Cranberry Almond (NOT THE MEAL REPLACEMENT BAR)
3. 30 pistachios and a low-sodium V-8
4. One slice whole grain toast (at least 3 grams of fiber, 4 or 5 better) with fat free Promise and a little low sugar Jelly. (Fieldstone Farm has my favorites . . . ) http://www.fieldstonefoods.com/ourproducts.html

I usually have some combination of yogurt, v8(low sodium), and a piece of fruit around. I should get back in the habit of having nuts around my office too. Cheese is a good idea too, I always forget about the mozzerella sticks, I love those things

The problem is when I eat the snack right after my lunch, which happens alot since I have no self control!

I'll try to eat only half my food at lunch(but it's so hard b/c it's so good) it's one of those plate lunches that comes with a salad already and it's healthy food(I get the veggie plate) it's just alot, and I always gorge myself there. Maybe I'll try drink half my glass of water before I even start, and that'll fill me up some

In that case, just have more than one snack on hand. Have a piece of fruit or cup of yogurt to finish off your meal, then wait a few hours to have your actual snack (like cheese or another piece of fruit).

Wrong direction, maybe last weeks no running caught up to me!

Next week there will be an abundance of activity, as well as an abundance of food. I'll be eating out everyday next week, although there will be alot of seafood choices, hopefully all the activity will balance well with the food

Maine-iac
01-26-2007, 10:49 AM
Good luck! If you are eating out, seafood is great (not fried, of course). Beware the bread basket, sauces and salad dressings. Activity can offset a multitude of sins.

Vacation, perhaps? If so, hope you have fun!

2/5: 144 Whoo hoo back in the right direction. I was missing a scale last week so I couldn't weigh in like normal at the end of the week. I tend to be higher right after the weekend, so I'm pretty happy with this number.

I missed half the superbowl, and had no superbowl snacks, but I had 6 alcoholic drinks yesterday! I almost never drink that much, but it was spread out all day long

I had french fries twice last week :exams: if someone has gorgonzola potatoes on the menu who excepts then to bring out waffle fries and gorgonzola dipping sauce! but other that that I ate pretty well

Ok Food network is driving me crazy. in honor of V-day they are having a chocolate week, it looks soooo good. Maybe I go buy some expensive fancy choclate and make something, the price of the chocolate will force me not to make to much

on the plus side I had a nice long run this morning, weather is great here

You could buy yourself a small portion of really good dark chocolate - that way, you feel like you're indulging, yet you're getting the health benefits of dark chocolate and not overdoing it too badly. When I saw the chocolate week on Food Network, I had to immediately turn the channel because I knew it would be dangerous! :)

Oh, and as for the weather, now you're just bragging. ;)

I don't think I've ever watched the food network. Had no idea they were even running this. OTOH, I did find out that a restaurant not too far from here does chocolate buffets on Saturdays...now THAT's dangerous...

I do tend to have a small portion of dark chocolate every now and then. The diet plan allows it in small quantities due to the cardiac benefits.

But in general, I think avoiding "The Food Network" is the way to go when trying to cut down. Their whole raison d'etre is to make the food look appealing, and they do it very well!

But I LOVE the food network!!! Actually I don't think I do to bad, except for when they show me chocolate every 4 seconds. We usually watch alot of Alton Brown(which is mostly about science not food), Barefoot Contessa, and anything with Mario Batali(sometimes Giada or Rachael shows too). I avoid chefs who make food that always starts with a pound of Crisco(Paula Deen) or fake indgrediants(Sandra Lee)

I ended up making oatmeal CC cookies. Using bittersweet chocolate, I froze about 2/3 of the dough so I only ended up eating 8 cookies over 2 days. Not bad for a chocolate craving, although I would have done better if I'd just made a single dessert

My downfall is usually the shows like "Unwrapped" when they show you how Hostess snacks are made. After about 5 minutes, you suddenly find yourself craving a Twinkie really bad! :)

I got a side salad and a half order of pasta to go from a local place for lunch today. Half my lettuce is brown and the pasta that looked so good on my friend's plate last week when we went there is very oily. I wonder if they just decide to make crap for the to go orders.

Plus I forget to put the spinach in the casserole I made for tonight

I've found that crappy food can be good for a diet because you definitely eat less! :) One day last week, I got a big grilled chicken sandwich and a banana for lunch. Half of the chicken had nasty fat/grissle on it, and half of the banana turned out to be rotten! So that helped keep my calorie count down for the day.

2/15: 142 I toggled between 141.5 and 142 but I'll say 142 so it can look like I make some progress other weeks

I was super good on V-day, but I know today will go downhill as people are bringing in leftover treats.

Also this weekend will be bad bad bad. I'm running a race, so I'll load up on carbs beforehand, and indulge afterwards. I doubt the calories I burn during the race will make up for any of this

I think my new ultimate goal is 135, it's so fun to see the scale getting lower

I knew this would happen but I'm still bummed. I ate alot this week lots and lots of carbs, and not very many vegtables. I have been too sore to work out until last night, but even that was really tough. On a positive note I ran a fast race this weekend, I just had a really good day

Back to business, MrsFrog. Try drinking more, instead of eating, when you study. That's what I do. I have a 1L bottle of water next to me at all times while I study. Refilling it constantly. Or try making a protein shake. I'd bet that would be good too. I'm gonna start trying that on the weekends, to help curb any hunger I might feel when I'm studying for longer periods of time. But no food in the room. Now if I could just get rid of the remote control, I'd be all set. ;)

never had propel. The only thing I'll drink with calories is espresso (5cals per shot, for sanity) and chocolate milk (for recovery). I don't feel the need to drink calories when I feel much happier eating them, so I seek out cal-free drinks when I get sick of water (rare). My fave is fruit2o + 10 (berry), which tastes like berries because it smells like berries (so no real berry sugar in there, although I think there's a very light flavor added...), but also has 10 vitamins & minerals added in (ie, "healthy").

I've never had fruit20, I'll look for it next time I go to the store. I've thought about bringing in tea to sip at work since I don't think downing coffee all day will help any. Part of my study problem is I give myself food rewards for studying, it REALLY helps my studying, which in the long term is probably more beneficial. I'm not talking about eating Mcdonalds everyday, but I'll probably have more ice cream, cookies, bread and cheese(not all at once!) in the next few weeks, it's hard to deny myself those when I'm working so hard at studying

Oh and yanz propel has very few calories, like 10 per 8 ounces according to their website

My biggest problem when studying is that I'll get frustrated or get to something that I'm having trouble understanding, so I'll say to myself "I need a break now". And that break usually leads me to the kitchen. Actuarial material seems so much easier to understand once you've had a couple of cookies. :) I'm trying to learn to deal with my frustrations in healthier ways, such as taking a workout break or even a 15 minute TV break.

Note to yanz: I recently attended a meeting on how to train for a half-marathon. The instructor talked about nutrition and one of the things she suggested for recovery.....chocolate milk! I thought of you. :)

3/29 138.5 What the frick and frack! I've been on the scale every day for 2 weeks and not once have I gone below 140(well once I togegled into 139.5, but it went right back up to 140.0) Today I get on and I'm a pound and a half lighter. This must be from working out, cause it's sure not from good eating, I had cookies and beer for dinner last night! WTH

Maine-iac

Well, we are women, and there is a certain cyclical bounce. At a particular time of the month I almost always suddenly "lose a pound" for a day or two. It comes right back.

I sometimes use the food reward strategy too, but I found it was important to choose the food rewards. When it was cookies, cheese, chocolate, etc. I would definitely overdo.

Now I buy really good loose tea, and reward myself with a cup of one of those blends. If you are studying at work, there are some higher quality brands in bags as well, though they are a little harder to find. And I might add a slice of whole-grain toast, with an exotic jam on it. The jam is pretty much a sugar thing, but the toast evens out the blood sugar, and the quantity is naturally limited. Healthy and enjoyable snacks are essential to a good nutrition plan, and once you find out which ones you really enjoy, you can save those as your rewards.

I am so stupid. I just bought a bag of pita chips for a snack, it was one of those medium sized bags not the kind they give you when they ask do you want chips and drink with your sandwich, it's probably 3 times the size. I opened it up and put it next to me, and kept reaching into it. Finally I realized that I'd been doing this a while and looked down into it. It's nearly empty..... I looked at the package and there are 6 serving for 140 calories each. I think I just had a 700 calorie snack!

The worst part is I'm still hungry

Resurrecting my thread. It was very helpful to post my weight last year. I rarely weighed myself all summer and fall, nor did I workout at all until a few months ago :tfh:

However I've mange to keep my weight pretty steady. Mainly b/c I've been very active, despite not having scheduled workouts.I plan to weigh myself weekly, on Thursday's or Friday's to give myself the most time to work off any weekend goodies.

Wednesday 1/2 142.5
Thursday 1/3 140.5
Saturday 140.0

The healthy food thread that Sotally Tober posted is helping me see that I need to get back to eating alot of fruits and veggies, I've really been slacking especially on lunches. Also I keep forgetting to buy oatmeal at the store, I've been out for a month now!

Friday 1/11 141.0

I've been eating healthy food this week, but alot of it. I keep eating my snacks at work very early, feel starved the rest of the afternoon, then make myself another snack while I cook dinner. Then I probably eat to much dinner too. I have a habit of eating pretty fast, and I'm trying to slow myself down.

I didn't work out as much as I would have liked this week either, I only ran twice. The weather was nice and I had the time, I was just being lazy. Well lazy and my feet are bothering me(blisters)

Don't know if it would work for you, or just make you feel silly, but way back when a Weight Watchers counselor suggested to a class I was in that if we were eating too fast to try eating with chopsticks for a few meals to force yourself to slow down and to see what slower eating might do to your consumption amounts.

Of course, if you are adept at using chopsticks, this doesn't work. ;)

hmmmm that's an interesting idea that I never would have thought of.

I'm not adept at chopsticks, but I can use them. Pasta dishes, pizza and sandwiches/burgers are my biggest challenge for quick eating. It won't help with the pizza and sanwiches(I don't put the food down at all ) but I may try this for pasta and see how it works.

If you know this is true, be more conscious when you eat and put down the item/utensil between every bite.

For pizza and sandwiches, you were supposed to cut them up into bites you could eat with the chopsticks. It certainly slowed things down!

I just tried a new yogurt. I glanced at the nutritional values and noticed it had 230 calories, thought that seemed like alot for a 6 oz container of yogurt so I looked at the fat content 17 grams :yikes: I won't be having that yogurt again no matter how creamy and good it tasted

I used to eat the fat free (or low fat?) colombo fruit on the bottom 8oz size. It was much larger than the average yogurt and much fewer calories.

oh, and it was still very yummy (didn't taste "fat free" or whatever)

I like Dannon, plain, low-fat yogurt, with a teaspoon of raspeberry preserve, some strawberries (I get them frozen and thaw them), and some granola. I wasn't really a yogurt person before, but I think this was pretty good. I notice little to no difference b/w the low-fat & regular. FWIW.

But yeah, 17g for that, hardly seems like it can possibly be good enough to be worth it. Unless it is doing a fantastic job of satiating your hunger, which I'm guessing it wouldn't.

Nope I was starving a few hours later.

I just thought I'd try something different, I'm back to my normal 1.5 grams of fat yogurt

ST I used the get the frozen strawberries and thaw them and stick them in yogurt with granola for breakfast, but it really didn't fill me up, I was hungry long before lunch, I've discovered I really need some protein in the am. Which means eggs or oatmeal

Yea, I found that my 100 calorie oatmeal keeps me full longer than the 8oz yogurt, so I switched.

I don't eat yogurt everyday, but lowfat yogurt has more than just protein. The bacteria in it is great for the digestive tract, the calcium helps, and it tastes like melted icecream.
I make my own lowfat yogurt, add a teaspoon of strawberry/apricot/whatever jam I have at home to it, and enjoy a truly delicious dessert some nights.
It wouldn't fill me up enough to be a complete breakfast, though.

I agree. Eggs & oatmeal (especially) do a better job. I also like whole grain, wheat toast with a little peanut butter & raspberry preserve. That does a decent job for me as well.

There is a compromise - Greek yogurt. I buy the fat free and use about a teaspoon of honey and 5 almonds for a cup; the yogurt itself has 100 calories and 20 grams of protein.

OMG greek yogurt is delicious - where do you buy it?

be careful if you don't buy the non fat kind it has 17 grams of fat :)
I just got it at my grocery store they just had a few individual servings, and I'm pretty sure no non fat ones, but I think that whole foods has more varieties

Friday 1/18 141.0. I think the amount I eat when I'm trying to lose weight, is really the amount I need to maintain my weight. I'm fairly discouraged right now, but I know I shouldn't be given what I ate this week

I use the Trader Joe's brand. It's cheaper than the Fage at WF.

2/5 141.0 - still holing steady. I really wish the scale would move, just a little. Although I ate and drank alot this weekend, so I probably should be happy it didn't go up. I did really well yesterday

frozen meal
yogurt
chicken quesidilla with veggies(tomatoes, and sauteed onions and peppers)
1 beer
1 skinny cow ice cream sandwich
chocolate milk

Although now that I look at that it's alot of dairy
