it's frustrating when scifi writers talk about space colonization as a cure for overpopulation. Like we're going to put 3 billion people on a spaceship or something.

I mean, even supposing people could move freely, from planet to planet, from galaxy to galaxy, there's the more essential problem that the expansion of the sphere of planets that will make up humanity will happen in 2 dimensions, while the population growth of those planets will take place in 3. That, in the long run, each planet will really only get one more planet to fill.

Which is all to say that a universe can support humanity about as well as a forest can support a wildfire.
