Are Actuaries Fat?

Posted 12-04-2008 at 12:56 PM by stanley

I just took Course C last november. I took a lot of my personal time just to study for this unfortunately long exam . No complaints still since I was well informed by peers when i decided to pursue this profession. And sacrificing time from family and friends are the most obvious.

But I never realized that health is also part of the agreement in pursuit of this career. Having diagnosed with hypertension, i was reqired by doctors to spend an active life. Not being the most athletic guy in the universe, going to the gym and burning the threadmill rubber for 45 minutes is the ideal exercise for me. I enjoyed every second of it. I remember the time when I tried hard to convince my other non-athletic friends to try it, since i became so into it. I lost a significant amount of weight in the process and even planned to join the marathon.

These things happened in just three months (diagnosis, going to the gym, planning to join the marathon). Then study time came along and everything went back to where it was before. Going to the gym became less and less until it reached zero. The initial guilt of not going to the gym each day transformed into a guilt of not seeing Actex every night. My weight went back to the 200lbs level and never bounced back. I slept dreaming to finish a short course in marathon and woke-up in a marathon to finish a long course C.

Dont get me wrong, I am not lonely nor am I dissatisfied with how my life is going. It's just that I never realized that health has to take a toll as well. Hence I ask all of you. Are Actuaries Fat? or is it just me?

Back in the days of FM, I would go to the park, study for twenty minutes at a picnic table, and then run for twenty minutes. Which is to say I did both pretty bad. But also to say it's better when it's warm out and you can go outside, because when you're studying you really want to see some goddamn trees and stuff anyway...

I am going to have to agree. I am fat because I am either at work, studying, or it is too cold outside to get fit.
