I seem to have discovered a Reddit programming screw-up.
I've been banned from /r/legaladvice, a subreddit dedicated to helping people who need legal advice. I'm not a lawyer, of course, but I have some knowledge of personal lines, and some of the questions can be fielded in that way.
The banishment started over two years ago. A few weeks ago, I asked to be unbanned, with no response. Because I'm banned, I can't post comments there, and... I can't even post. If I ever need informal legal advice, well, I'll just have to contact a lawyer.
But I did discover today, that I can upvote/downvote threads and posts! Reddit has a mechanism that tells me that I shouldn't do that, but the votes go through. Nyah!
Even worse, this mechanism carries beyond /r/legaladvice after I leave, and follows me until I leave Reddit.
Oh, well.

My opinion of the Crash Course offerings is that to the extent that they're nonpolitical, I get good vibes. To the extent that they can be politicized, they are, couched in a "this is only reasonable" cloak.
Global Warming is mentioned a few times in passing, in a couple series. Likewise certain issues of US Government and etc. cover ideas from "It's bad to make women have sex with their bosses in order to keep their jobs, so..." when there's also an issue of how toxic employers have had to become to regulate how people interact.Posted 09-26-2015 at 02:22 AM by Len Myers -

Not only do they shoot horses, when they race, they're followed by a vehicle designed to look like a damned ambulance. More like ambushotgun.
I like watching horse racing from an owner's box.
But let's not forget the cruelty that follows as horses are bred to the absolute minimum of leg-bone strength, and sometimes, the horse has a mis-step. <Bang!>
For my taste, if a track has to shoot a horse, the enterprise that put the horse into competition should be shut down; its' assets sold.Posted 10-07-2015 at 08:32 PM by Len Myers -

Overtime!
I despise overtime! Worst of the worst, is the NFL. Followed by College football, and Association Football.
The NHL has a new structure for overtime: 3 on 3 + goalies. It looks exciting, as ice hockey goes. So why don't they do this for the whole damned game?! Think of all the money they'd save on salary, and all the attendance they'd garner.
Even Chess has fallen for this idiocy. Witness this game between two world-class players, making dumb move after dumb move because the rules take away all their thinking time. For reference, Svidler is rated #19 on the planet, and his opponent is #12.
Worse than that is the final tie-break in this format, where Black wins on a draw, but gets less thinking time.
Sometimes a draw is the only equitable option.Posted 10-09-2015 at 06:17 PM by Len Myers

Google played an instrumental part in getting lil' Barry elected and re-elected. Having learned their lesson, they're trying to put Hillary in. Hello Bing. It would appear that what's good for the nation is not good for Google.
That's my opinion.Posted 10-09-2015 at 07:16 PM by Len Myers -
Recycling! Were it worth doing, people would be happy to go through our trash and pick out the valuable bits. It isn't, and they aren't, so instead of doing things that we want to do, we're required to sort trash... which often ends up in the landfill anyway. But we can feel good about it!

Little do they know that, even if their local trash collector says it recycles that waste, they might as well be chucking those plastics in the trash bin.
“[Plastics] 3-7 are absolutely going to a landfill—[China's] not taking that any more… because of Green Fence,” David Kaplan, CEO of Maine Plastics, a post-industrial recycler, tells Quartz. “This will continue until we can do it in the United States economically.Posted 10-09-2015 at 10:53 PM by Len Myers

Today's Ricksonian thought -- may his AO soul rest in peace -- is "deep state", a concept allegedly originating in Turkey, but having application in other places, such as the US, where it is also referred to as the "ruling class."
Now listen up, sheeple! Yeah, there might well be a group, formal or otherwise, that is damned well intent on running our lives and our nation badly, and willing to stop anyone else from doing so. But if that's the case, I see no reason to let them just stare us down. Make 'em work to stay on top, I say. I got nuttin' to lose, and they're doing a damned poor job, well deserving to be lined up against a wall and shot.Posted 10-12-2015 at 10:13 AM by Len Myers -
Moderated political debates -- about the only kind the party leaderships allow candidates -- are basically as rigged as a World Wrestling Federation match.
It should be possible to do better, as in this mano-a-mano between Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain in the style of Lincoln-Douglas.
Note: I haven't seen this yet, because it's preceded with a lot of irrelevant self-congratulatory chatter, but... I will.Posted 10-14-2015 at 09:05 AM by Len Myers -

One mark of a good leader is that he doesn't make stupid, serious mistakes. It's too bad there isn't a venue that tends to weed out stupid, serious mistakes. Oh, wait! There is one!
I would therefore recommend that nobody be allowed to run for national office prior to cashing in the WSOP final event. Not necessarily a high cash, but a cash nevertheless, and buying their own entry.
Equivalent honors may be possible. An IM norm (chess), a world championship in bridge, gawd-knows-what in Diplomacy, top-5 in Masterchef... the possibilities are endless, but it's got to be difficult, competitive, and free of cheating.Posted 10-28-2015 at 04:31 PM by Len Myers

I've rarely seen a face change as much as that of Uma Thurman. I hope she didn't have plastic surgery, as I suspect. That never ends well.

Last night, I found a story via Reddit. The claim is that almost half the homeless suffer from Traumatic Brain Injury. Other claims are the TBI occurs about 200,000 times per year in America. I don't know if these two facts can be reconciled, proven, or even true.
