Miss the old me

Posted 11-20-2008 at 01:17 PM by Inconceivable

This is a random blog and I doubt many people will read it but here it goesÖ.

Iíve been talking with my parents lately and they brought up some stuff from my childhood that made me think. Once they mentioned these things I immediately remembered them and now Iím not sure how I could have forgotten them in the first place.

So when I was a child (between age of about 5-12) I was able to all kinds of neat things that I forgot about and I canít do them any more. Apparently, I used to be able to use my internal clock to wake up at a certain time and didnít have any need for a conventional clock/alarm. I would just concentrate on the time I wanted to wake up the night before and repeat it a few times and I would wake up at exactly that time. (Iíve tried this several times since I remember that I used to do this and it has failed miserably)

I also used to have a semi-photographic memory; I would read something or see something and if I needed to recall it I would be able to recall the picture or the page in my head and find the information that I needed. Now that Iím older (27) I have a HORRIBLE memory and rely heavily or reminders and notes to remember all the things I need to do. (My schedule is that of an average 27 years old so itís no super crazy or anything). I used to remember the names of everyone I would meet right away but now thatís one of my weakest areas. (Absolutely terrible with names now)

I have no idea why things have changes so much since I was a child but Iím a little saddened by it. Lastly, I used to be HILARIOUS. I know that sounds conceded but many people that I met told me that I am the funniest person they have ever met (in all seriousness). I'm still a fairly funny guy but not nearly the way I used to be (several friends have actually mentioned this). I know people change over time but I sometimes miss the old me.

Wow, that's pretty bizarre. I know a lot of physiological changes happen as we go through puberty into adulthood....

About the internal clock thing,I wonder if you've done things that have messed up your internal clock, like especially caffeine dependence. Maybe if you got to a point in life where you could sleep as much as you wanted you could get your alarm clock back on track? Of course that's hopeless if you have (or will in the future have) kids -- they completely rewire your clock.

On the semi-photographic memory thing, I have a theory that kids brains are so EMPTY compared to adults that they can do that kind of recall much more easily. For example, friends and I could recite whole skits nearly verbatim after one viewing of Monty Python or the Simpsons (pre-VCRs). Now I can't even remember whether I've watched the episode for the week.
