I would go for a Riesling from Alsace to match the the potatoes (Also, because I love alsacian whites).

I had a good spanish red this week: Dehesa La Granja 2000.

It spent 30 months in new french oak and it shows: the nose is fabulous and there is a nice hint of vanilla in the finale.
