Default Neat little tricks / tips / etc

Share your neat little tricks/tips/etc that you use on your computer...

Here's mine:
In many Windows applications

ctrl-insert = copy
shift-delete = cut
shift-insert = paste

Comes in helpful if ctrl-c, x, or v are overridden with macros or aren't even used for copy/cut/paste.

In Excel, if you have a column of data (say, A1..A10) and type in a formula (or whatever) into B1, you can "fill down" by doing the following:

Select B1.
Put your cursor in the lower-right-hand-corner of B1
The cursor will turn into a thick-black-plus-sign.
Double click.

It will fill down from B1 to B10.

If you're running Windows, check this site out:
http://www.dslreports.com. In the tools section you can tweak test. There's a tool there that can noticeably speed up your broadband internet connection.

Also, http://grc.com. You really should go through the steps to make sure your machine isn't wide open to the world. Some of the Windows OS's leave a lot of stuff turned on automatically, this will show you how to turn them off.

Thanks for the tip - this is really cool! To think of all the time I've wasted dragging formulas down all those rows...

I use that frequently -- but as a word of warning: if you have any gaps in the column to the left, it will only fill down to the first gap. That is, if you have data in cells A1:A50 and A52:A3000, but cell A51 is blank, and you try this trick on a formula in B1, it will only fill down to cell B50.

Most of mine are for Excel.

Ctrl, End selects everything in the sheet.

I put the paste special-numeric icon on the toolbar--save me a fair bit of time.

I also love Autofilter and Subtotal(9, <range&gt which sums up only the visible stuff--great for checking your work.

Hey, those are neat.

Although, I've overwritten ctrl-end to a macro so that it's the equivalent of end-home in Lotus123. I got the code from Bama Gambler

See http://www.actuary.ca/phpBB/viewtopi...hlight=#248581 if you're interested

Anti-mouse tricks:

moving between windows applications: alt-tab
moving between sheets in excel: ctrl-page {up, down}
moving right/left on a particular sheet: tab/shift-tab
in IE, moving forward or backward one link: alt-right arrow/left arrow
closing any application: alt-F4

and of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg...

In Lotus123 or Excel (and probably others), use ctrl-tab or ctrl-shift-tab to move among the files that you have open.

It's the same thing in Lotus123 except it goes in the opposite direction.

ctrl-page down moves one sheet to the left in Lotus123 whereas it moves one sheet to the right in Excel.
