[Hey Ed]it's time to move those music threads here before the wc collapses !
[/Hey Ed] In a very particular order (alphabetical) : 1- Bran Van 3000 : "Discosis" 2- Daniel Belanger : "Rever mieux" 3- Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds : "No more shall we part" 4- Rufus Wainwright : "Poses" 5- Radiohead : "Amnesiac" Most of these people come from Montreal, asides from Radiohead and Cave. And if Leonard Cohen had been able to put a better musical wrapping on his new songs, 80% of my choices would be Montrealers. I'm going back there in 4 days |

Just got that Nick Cave CD. Did he change his singing style or something??? He kinda sounds like Elvis Costello now. The last thing of his I bought was Boatman's Call (or whatever it was called).

Flag : If we talk strictly on a vocal-level, Cave did change his singing style from his last album (Boatman's call - 1996). There is indeed a Costello ring to it and I admit, I miss his perfect former barytone voice in a few songs of the album.
I don't know if heavy smoking is to blame for this or if the change is voluntary, as another step further away from his Birthday Party/Kicking Against the Pricks days. His music is constantly evolving and each album has its own musical texture. This voice thing, along with the McGarrigle sisters in the background and the always excellent Seeds make this album different from all his other ones. He'll be in LA in April. Can't wait. |

The Springsteen Live form New York album is a rollicker.
[tan] It's not 2001, but I wonder if anyone's listened to Shane MacGowan's solo album from 2000. Just recently discovered The Pogues, and I can't get enough of 'em. I've heard that MacGowan's solo material ain't as good, but thought I'd ask the opinion of the RF regulars [/tan] |

[TANGENT]
Anyone heard of Baz or Edith Bunker's Crustified Armpit Insurance??? I bought a split LP last weekend strictly based on the handmade cover (actually a defaced country gospel album cover from 1973). Anyway, besides an LP, inside was: -a CDR of misc files and pictures -half a Simon & Garfunkel 45 (yes half!) -misc papers and handwritings My turntable's on the fritz, so I don't know what it sounds like yet. Just the grab bag of goodies was worth the $10. Quote:

These are, in my opinion, my favorite albums of the year. Granted, only the first one is mainstream, but - (Kubusschnitt) I like a good retro Berlin-Schüle vibe; (Isildurs) I really dig the way they mix jazz, rock and ambient elements; (Anubian Lights) That album is just d*mn infectious!; and (Glass Hammer) this one is just timely. |
