New SA qualification for actuaries
Tuesday, 24 November 2009

Aspiring actuaries will now be able to get a South African qualification, instead of doing it through the UK, the Actuarial Society said on Tuesday.

"The Actuarial Society of South Africa last night launched South Africa's very own professional actuarial qualification," a statement from the society read.

Society president Garth Griffin describes the introduction of the home grown actuarial qualification as a "tremendous milestone".

They've been offering their own version of the UK exams at the fellowship level for several years, but everybody still became FIA/FFA. Effective 2010 they are branching off entirely and will grant FASSA (although there's mutual recognition with the UK so a candidate can still get FIA/FFA if double dues don't hurt too much). The initial effort looks just like the UK curriculum - just run by the ASSA through their exams with the same university waiver structure that the UK has (same unis that previously had waivers through the UK). They've also had some input from the Aussies on how to run the university/Society partnership.

This is a pretty interesting paper on objectives of professional education:

I'd like to know who thinks f9c8b6e5-f1b4-40ca-90a9-209a4b23e1f0 is an appropriate file name.
