Since I hadn't personalized Ubuntu on my new computer, I decided to just delete the partition and install Mint. Sure, I could have done it differently, but it's what I felt like doing at the time. Haven't had a chance to work with it yet.
Have any of you used it?

The times I've installed it, it was for people who ended up with a virus on their computer regularly from carelessness and weirdos using their computer. All of them love it and don't miss Windows one bit. |

I want to have Excel available even if I wind up using the open source spreadsheet. I guess that's a wine thing?

You can always run windows in Virtualbox if you need Excel compatibility. Last time I checked Wine was not happy with recent versions of Excel. It may be better now though.

If you are need macro and all the fancy effects, maybe wine. If not, libreoffice (used to openoffice is an excellent alternative) |

Mint is what I put on a repurposed laptop for my kids to use. They've had no problems with it (currently aged 11 and 8)
Spreadsheets - my current biggest gripe about LibreOffice is that SUMIFS is not currently supported. Well that + macros. But works for almost all of my home needs. I've not used Crossover in quite a while. I do use WINE to run Hoyle Kids Games on the kids computer and it works great for that.

I'm liking Mint. I've reconfigured the look to my liking and I like the plan for transitioning to Gnome 3.
You can read about it here if you're interested. Spoiler: And here's the link to the blog post. http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1851
