Summary? Something?

I heard a 5-second teaser on the morning news. Something about cutting funding to PP? Maybe related to late-term abortions?

They cut funding to planned parenthood, people whined, and so they restored funding.

They used to give PP a lot of money for breast cancer screening. Then they decided to stop doing that. Then there was a huge outcry, and PP was given about 60% of that money in the past week from other sources. Then the Komen foundation backed down and said they would continue to give money to PP for breast cancer screening.

I think that's most of what happened.

They also quietly killed funding for stem cell research. They also blatantly lied about why they were cutting them off in the first place. They claimed it was because of the "investigation" launched by a pro-life congressman. And there was the fact they had recently taken on a senior executive who when she ran for governor of some state ran specifically on a platform of ending all funding for anything that had anything to do with Planned Parenthood, because PP performs abortions.

Who cares? It's a terrible organization that does more harm than good for cancer research by funnelling way too much money to an easily detectable, easily survivable cancer instead of to the more dangerous cancers.

And apparently they have spent a lot of money pushing suboptimal treatment of breast cancer, too. For instance, they fought to keep some drug approved after a bunch of big studies showed it didn't actually work, and they continie to fight for more and earlier mammograms, even though the evidence suggests that in general, they are a waste of money and lead to a lot of false positives, with the concurrent emotional distress, expensive medical followup, and time off work for that medical followup.

(at least, that's what some other breast cancer specialist on NPR claimed.)

lol I'm sure this opinion has nothing to do with your views on abortion.
