The older I get, the less left wing I get. This is a typical left wing view, oh noes, all those damned poor people are going to destroy the world. The heavily implied racism in such an analysis makes me more than a little sick.

It sounds like you're projecting. Intuitively you understand that the current course is not sustainable, but you'd rather not give up your car, air dry your clothes, grow some of your own food, etc etc. Instead, you attack the messenger, apparently without even reading the article. I didn't detect even a hint of racism.

Where the generally go is to force other countries to stop developing.

On the flip side, they want massive increases in government here to reduce consumption in the rich world.

Neither will happen without reducing freedoms dramatically.
