I have a question regarding my degree and hope anyone who has some experience in recruiting can help me out. I'm finishing up my Degree of Science with majoring Actuarial Science and minoring Stats. It seems that I have only few courses away from bumping my minor to major in stats, having 2 majors. however I'm into econ these days and thinking about doing econ minor for the year left instead of choosing to go for stats major. I am just not sure which would be more beneficial in getting jobs.
So bottom line is, Is One major with Two minors stands out more than Two majors ? or is the two majors better?

I don't think much of the minors. To me, whether you have them or you don't is exactly the same. A major, however, is pretty major. It's a stand-alone achievement. Think of this this way. With a major in Statistics you are a Statistician. With 2 minors in Economics and Statistics you are NOT a statistician and you are NOT an economist. You are an Act. Sc. major that not even actuaries like.
P.S. I have no experience in recruiting. |

Here is the thing:
No one cares what you major or minor in just as long as you are passing exams and you have other things going for you outside of school. Study whatever makes you happy. Employers will be more impressed if you do things with your major outside of the normal undergrad curriculum with it. |

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I think im sticking with joni's opinion and finish up my stats major. It sure is a lot of work compare to getting econ minor but it seems worth it. The other threads about who cares n whatnot just discourages me lol.

Lol no one cares about minors 99% of time. Two majors is more interesting, but also not likely to set you apart in a meaningful way.

Here is when minors matter:
1) When you major in piano recital, a math minor tells something new about you. 2) When you major in stats and econ, a creative writing minor tells something new about you Do you understand? ActSci, Stats, Econ--that's all the same shit. What is the difference between someone who majored in ActSci and someone who majored in ActSci with a Stats minor? Hint: nothing important.

You can always do the two majors and the econ minor.(If you have the time)
I did a dual degree course where my first one was in Applied Math and a minor in Physics, and my 2nd degree was in Economics with a minor in math. I opted to do that instead of a single DM degree with a minor. Econ is a very useful major to have IMHO, and I would definitely do it before one in stats (Which is honestly mostly covered by your Act Sci major) When I was doing interviews this past month, they were always impressed by the fact I also had an Econ degree. They put a lot of stock in that kind of degree(or major) as it is a pretty important part of being an Actuary these days. |

Q. What do I do next? A. List all options. Pick one randomly. You'll almost surely be much better off this way than by following an "expert"'s advice. |
