What kind of work does your chief actuary do? Is it "traditional" actuarial work?

None. Here is his typical day:

1. Arrive at the office at about 8:45.
2. Go to morning break at 9:00 - 9:45.
3. Sit in a meeting from 9:45 - 10:45 making no attempt to show that he is the least bit interested.
4. Talk to his freinds and family (not MCI customers) from 10:45 - 11:30.
5. Go to lunch from 11:30 - 1:15.
6. Read his bible and talk to fellow church goers from 1:15 - 2:30.
7. Walk the building, pretending to have a meeting, from 2:30 - 3:00.
8. Talk to more people from 3:00 - 4:00.
9. Run out of the building at 4:00 hoping that nobody notices that he is leaving (as if we ever knew he was there).

I can't wait to get that job!

I enjoyed reading the above posting.

I have found that unless you report to the chief actuary (which I didn't in my very first job, and I don't now), you probably have no idea what he or she does. I once was a chief actuary, so I have a little perspective. He or she probably attends lots of meetings, some of which are high level and confidential (should we buy a competitor? who should we let go if we have to lay people off?), and some of which are high level and ridiculous (should we paint the walls beige?).

His day is certainly different from ours if he doesn't find time to log in to RF.

The chief actuary spends a great deal of time explaining IBNR to VPs and up (Not just the actual numbers, but the whole concept) Repeatedly. Every quarter. Over and over and over and over . . .

His meetings are usually with his fellow church friends. They get together on work time to discuss the bible. Once they have finished a lengthy 2 hour discussion, he goes out to lunch with them.

Maine-iac - Oh, so it's not that different from consulting.

I have to get one of those jobs.

Seriously, does the chief actuary at your company/firm work as hard/harder than the staff actuaries? I've never worked for a loafer, just curious if it's common or not.
