Default buying a guitar for a beginner

i know there are some musicians here so i figured i'd ask. i want to learn to play guitar but have no knowledge about them and was wondering if anyone can give suggestions about buying a first electric guitar. should i just get a cheap used one or buy a new one, etc. also what is a good amp to start off with?

electric or acoustic?

re: acoustic
JMHO - you can get a reasonably nice new one for not much buckage if you do your homework. Gull is nice, and Ibanez makes a nice axe, too... new for around $200. Yamahas are cheapies. don't forget a case and a dozen picks - they seem to get lost very easily.

try this: http://www.ibanez.com/aw/

Get plenty of picks, agreed.

Get a backup set of strings as well, and a stem-winder (and, if you can swing it, a quick string-changing lesson).

Don't go for "cheap" as the only criterion. The first guitar I ever bought was very hard to play (still is, even now that I know what I'm doing, a little).

If you're looking to save money, shop for new and find out what's best (Looks like Pi Man knows what he's talking about.)then search the pawn shops. You can sometimes find a good steal.

Also check out Stratacoustics or Telecoustics. They're cheap, versatile and fun to play.

Headphone amps are pretty cool.

Guitar Wolf is not a guitarist. Any statements above are strictly his semi-informed/uninformed opinion. He can tell you a little about ouds, though.

are they? do they have a true pre-amp, or is it raw signal directly from the pickup? can you daisy-chain effects into the 'phones?

I used to have a cheapie one. It was about the size of a Walkman and had built-in effects. That's about all I can tell ya.

I wouldn't doubt if Line 6 has made a kick-ass one.

NYLON STRINGS unless you need to bleed to death thru your fingers. If you must use steel, pop for some elixirs or Martins. It will be worth the difference in price.

nix on the nylons unless you really really like the sound...

start slow, 10-15 minutes/day and build up. you'll get some kaluses in short order and then you can REALLY start to jam!
