Oceanside district bans flags; walk-outs cause financial loss

NORTH COUNTY ---- After a week of student demonstrations against stricter illegal immigration laws that resulted in hundreds of students walking out of class, confrontations with police and about 45 arrests, life pretty much returned to normal Monday at North County schools, district officials said.

However, flags were banned Monday at all Oceanside Unified School District campuses, as they had been at at least one Escondido middle school last week ---- a move some are calling unconstitutional.

Three juveniles will face felony charges for incidents stemming from last week's protests, said Deputy District Attorney Robert Eichler, chief of the Juvenile Division of the San Diego County district attorney's office.

And district officials revealed Monday that the unauthorized student walk-outs will cost North County school districts tens of thousands of dollars in state funds given to districts based on per-student attendance.

Oceanside Unified School District Superintendent Ken Noonan said Monday he has banned all flags, patriotic clothing, face paint and placards on campuses because they became an emotional flashpoint for both protesters and non-protesting students.

"All those items were contributing factors in last week's disturbances," he said.

I find myself alligned with the ACLU on this one.

1st Amendment rights are severely restricted at schools for a reason.

You gotta protest about something? Contact your government to -- let's see, how does that go -- peaceably assemble and petition it for a redress of grievances.
But not at school, for the purpose of causing disruption of the educational process. By stepping on school property, you are willingly agreeing to abide by certain rules.

Is the American Flag causing disruption when worn on people's clothes? If so, then yeah, ban them from wearing them at school, where the goal is to educate students.
Wearing an American flag is also disrespectful of it.
