Default As of this moment - Is Carlos Betran The NL MVP?

Just yes or no.

I actually felt that Wright has been the more valuable Met, but you can't argue the numbers. And I feel that it is amost even between he & Pujols. The tie goes to the team with the better record.

Thoughts??

I still think its Pujols but if he starts missing any more time with this new injury than its Beltran.

Thumbs up

My Cardinal bias shall shine like a beacon of light.

The Cardinals would be absolutely sunk this year without Pujols. Their offense would suck, their pitching would suck. They would be horrendous. Pujols has won many games for them, both directly (like the 1-0 game Colorado game where he hit the solo HR, and many other GW RBI's) and indirectly (his other, non GW numbers). If we're going for "value," I don't think the Cards make the playoffs without him. I think the Mets still make the playoffs quite handily without Beltran.

That being said, I'm in the better-player-should-win-MVP camp, and I think Pujols still wins that one too. Although that'll take further analysis.

Aeyyyyyy!

That's cool. If I didn't have a Met's bias I wouldn't be asking the question while he is on an incredible tear. He has to cool down some as the season goes on.

Getting his BA up to .300 would help.

For what it's worth, here are the top 10 in the NL in BB Prospectus VORP (Value over replacement player). VORP represents the number of runs a player produced over a league average player at his position, and is cumulative for the year.

(Can't get this to format nicely)

NAME VORP
Albert Pujols 55.9
Chase Utley 51.9
Carlos Beltran 48.4
Lance Berkman 43.2
Miguel Cabrera 41.6
Nick Johnson 41.6
Alfonso Soriano 39.5
David Wright 39.1
Jason Bay 38.1
Chipper Jones 37.8

Out of curiosity, I looked up the current "Win Shares" numbers for the NL. FWIW, it puts Pooholes up top, followed by Derek Lee. Beltran, 25th, is the third highest-ranked Met, after Wright (11th) and Floyd (18th).

Not sure if this says more about the MVP race, or about Win Shares (which, IINM, seem to have pretty much fallen off the stathead face of the Earth).

Those are the 2005 win shares.... I was a little skeptical of D. Lee being 2nd this year.

Do'h! Thanks for picking that up.

Are current WS tabulated anywhere? Anyone know?
