Default Extended Death Benefit Rider

This is one of the 3 Disability Benefit Riders for Life Insurance. Can someone clarify when the additional benefit is paid- prior to death or after. I've read somewhere it pays for a limited period (1 year) from disability, so I'm almost sure it is before death. I guess I might be confusing it with the Survivor Income Rider. And, is it a monthly benefit? Although, it will be a small amount (like equal to premium) and to keep cost down it might be payable at once.
