Default DIPLOMACY (R) The Game.

I'm willing to moderate a game of diplomacy.

We'd need seven players, and a pool of substitutes would be appreciated.

A good copy-editor with a flair for the dramatic (and a basic understanding of the game) could only help.

For the benefit of those unfamiliar to the game, Diplomacy (r) is set in Europe, 1901. Austria-Hungary, England, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, and Turkey vie for control of the continent.

Generally speaking, to win, you must have both friends and enemies. Ideally the friends will be the trusting type, and the enemies will be unsuspecting -- or at least preoccupied.

The rules are simple; the scheming is not!

RULES:
  • You may only be one player;
  • You may not be the supervisor, however indirectly, of another player;
  • You will let me know if you know any of the other players.

Any motions from the floor? Any players??

I was given the computer game as a gift 3 months ago. I haven't installed it yet, as it looked like it had quite a learning curve. My brother in law recommends it.

What sort of time commitment would this require? Would there be a need to be on-line at certain specific times?

How often would a turn be? Who thinks that this is the game for Flora!

Something tells me there must be more rules than this!

The game or the computer version thereof? I've never played either, but the Amazon reviews of the computer version basically said it was a huge disappointment.

Oh. I'm sure he was thinking of the game. I didn't realize it also had a board (or paper) version.

Sorry, those rules are merely the prerequisite for playing Diplomacy on an anonymous forum.

Diplomacy is as brutal a game as exists in the intellectual world, with the possible exceptions of John Nash's So Long, Sucker, politics, and interviewing. I find it not at all ridiculous that a player would threaten another's job security in order to win.

It's that kind of game.

..................................................

I recommend two moves per week; one move per week starting 5/1 to the end of exams; and one crisis delay per active player, if announced. Because I'm a softie.

.................................................

I'd heard that even the current computer game doesn't adjudicate the moves properly, so there will be some delay, unless I find out otherwise.

Two moves a week is pretty quick, but if you can find a group of people who've played before I'm game.
