Default Cool tricks!

This thread is for sharing neat little "tricks" that your coworkers, past or present, in your department or in other departments, have come up with.

Example:
A co-worker shared with me a story of some data that he had gotten last week from another department, which shall remain nameless, to protect the "innocent." We needed a database of data elements x, y, and z by month. This department keeps that data in excel spreadsheets, a separate spreadsheet for each month. So my co-worker has to cut and paste into a master table from 20 or so different, idiosyncratically named spreadsheets, no biggie.

Well, during this process, it was discovered that some clever Clarence in that other department had learned what "macros" are, and had decided to create a macro that would clear all of the information off the tab you are working on. The macro was in some, but not all, of the spreadsheets. This savant even knew how to assign that macro to a keyboard shortcut.

The shortcut they picked was ctrl+C. As my friend unfortunately discovered.

That is awesome! I always wanted to set one up for F1 where, instead of popping up help, it just popped up a message that they were idiots needing help with Excel and then saving and closing Excel.

Seems like you'd be better off just linking in the first sheet, then using a search/replace to change the sheet name, then updating links.

Or, even hold the file name as a reference in the sheet you are importing into.

I take it you're not looking for these kinds of "tricks".

Silly rabbit...tricks are for kids.

I didn't see the files, I don't know how uniform they were, so I don't know if these were feasible options. Given the quality of the data I have seen from them before, I wouldn't be surprised if neither of those ideas worked.
