At my college, you were automatically undeclared your freshman year, though for all practical purposes most students had an unofficial major for purposes of assigning an advisor and schedule planning. I declared my unofficial major (biology) in my sophmore year, and then switched to math in my junior year, just in time to avoid live animal lab.
