Default Visualizing mortality and other data trends

[I also posted this in the life forum.]

Very interesting TED talk by Gary Flake:

http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/ga...ploration.html [~6 min flash video]

One of the examples he shows involves mortality patterns.

The upshot is that data visualization technology will make it easier and more intuitive to start at a high level of abstraction and then go more granular as needed. I think actuaries have always been "in the business" of doing this, but in many ways this is much more upside down than conventional approaches.

Data visualization tools will probably be extremely common in a few years, as they offer a promising way to digest the extreme torrent of data coming from the web. It will also be interesting to see if actuaries can harness other new data sources from the web to model policyholder behavior, conduct BI, etc.

We'll probably be working with pivot tables "on steroids" in no time.

Neat. What caused the inflection point in auto deaths around 2005?

Actually saw a presentation on bodily injury claims (personal auto) last hour, and the claim frequency has flattened out the past decade-ish

So it's not just deaths

Check out the first graph in this article. Vehicle miles traveled flattened and then started decreasing in 2006.
