One reason for working a year first is to prove yourself. Another is to make contacts and learn the systems.

What about proposing a part time schedule for the first year - something that would allow you to get into the job and still survive the commute. Then inquire about going full time and working some from home.

I worked for 3 years before starting to telecommute with my current employer. I don't think that many companies hire telecommuters right off the street.
