Default Computer crashed; need to get music off ipod touch

I have googled this to death. first let me describe my sitch:

Computer crashed, my wife's company's IT is trying to rescue my HD, but are very slow due to their "real" work.

I have bought a new computer. I haven't installed Itunes on it yet, because I don't want ITunes to recognize a foreign Ipod and erase it.

In the mean time I want to retrieve all the music from my 32GB 1st gen ipod touch. It's 90% full.

There are a ton of paid software solutions out there. I'm not sure the reliability of any of them. I also found a winamp (yeah I was also surprised they still exist) + winamp plug in solution, but can't seem to make it work. APparently they want me to install Itunes for some proprietary ipod files.

Anyway, here's my questions:

1. Anyone use any of the paid solutions? I have read somewhere that the ipod/iphone O/S version 3 and 4 have built protections against the downloading of music off an ipod/itouch.

2. I also read that if I jailbreak an iphone this is a piece of cake. but can one jailbreak an ipod?

3. has anyone done this with other methods?

Help!

itunes will not wipe the ipod unless you allow it to. Install it and use the winamp solution.

got this to work with the free version of "tuneaid"

it limits the number of songs you can do at one time under the free version, but the paid version allows you to do more.

Don't know about the iPod Touch, but with my sister's iPod Classic, I was able to mount it as a hard drive, find the folder with a bunch of files named things like X4bD.mp3, A56I.mp3. Those were the songs and once I loaded them back in iTunes and used the "organize my music" option, it changed all the names back to the originals using the metadata.

ETA: I used a Linux system to mount the iPod, I believe.

Way to go. I had the same problem with an ipod and mounted it in Windows - I guess you can do the same for an ipod touch - just plug in and d=search for ".mp3".

If you load iTunes on the new computer, make sure to set it to manually update, rather than automatically synch. That should prevent it from wiping your existing iPod.

AT the risk of reefing this thread, what does it mean to mount an ipod?

Simply plugging it in to the computer via usb and opening windows explorer? I tried this, and couldnt see anything.

How is it not the default for iTunes to ask what you want to do? There are about a million results for people who had iTunes erase their iPod. What a dumb default.

Yes, mount is exactly that. You might have to change a setting in iTunes to allow mounting as a mass storage device.

As I mentioned, I got on mine using a Linux machine so it didn't care that it was an iPod and only cared that it was a hard drive with data.

Anyone have specific instruction for mounting the iPod on Windows?

Yes, it's a dumb default. But it's easy to change.
