Default FSA Track

Not sure if everyone saw this, but there is a thread on the revised FSA exam structure over in the exam committee sub-forum. I guess its time to get strategic about which FSA exam I'm sitting for this Fall...

What happens if you pass one 6 hour exam before the changes are made. I assume that if you pass both 6 hour exams before the change, that you won't be affected by the changes.

For all tracks non-Finance, nothing really changes.

one 6 hour exam --> one 5 hour exam
two 6 hour exams --> two 5 hour exams + 2 hour exam

So basically it sucks if you only pass one before the transition starts, but it's not too bad (especially if you want CERA too).

For Finance track, it's pretty clear what exam you want to take first..

FETE --> one 5 hour exam
AFE --> one 5 hour exam + 4 hour ERM exam

No brainer to try to pass AFE before the transition so you get credit for 9 hours of exams!

I'm not sure this is true. The following is from the transition rules on the SOA site. I read the bolded as one 6 hour exam --> 5 hour exam + 2 hour exam

Quote:
  • Candidates who have passed both exams in their track will receive credit for FNC, FC and FA.
  • Candidates, other than U.S. Retirement Benefits, who have passed exactly one exam in their track will receive credit for FNC and the exam to which their exam has been mapped.
  • U.S. Retirement Benefits will map DP to FNC and CSP to FA. There will be no FC exam for U.S. Retirement Benefits candidates; the two EA exams will continue to be required.

Me too. I could have sworn the FNC credit wasn't mentioned when it was first posted yesterday. I wonder if they changed/corrected it since then. I looked for a post where the same section was quoted to validate my confusion but I couldn't find one.

Does it bother anyone else that they seem to think 3 exams are the same as 2, just because the total hours are the same?

Oh well, just a little extra motivation to get the last two exams done...

There will probably be some syllabus changes for AFE... However I don't expect the testable material on the other exams to change much, if at all.
