Default Impressions of ST9 exam gained at ERMM seminar

Points that the ERMM seminar presenters made about the ST9 exam compared to CAS exams:

1) Questions are much more open-ended
2) The pass mark is considerably lower.
3) The "BS to crunch" ratio is much higher
4) Terminology may be a barrier, but it should not be insurmountable.
5) Credit is given in half-point increments (rather than CAS quarter-points), roughly a half point for each relevant statement.

That's pretty much my takeaway as well. Write until your hand cramps into a little tiny ball, and then use your toes.

Much less "guidance" from the examiners on where they would like you to go in answering the question. On the other hand, it also doesn't appear that they are looking for well-crafted essays with convincing arguments as opposed to the scatter gun approach.

I concur with the two of you. The subtlety of the questions and having to parse each adjective in the question statement is getting me nervous. Alistair's recommendations were helpful, but with the volume of material to know…

Sheesh, if they expect us to know the Debye formulæ to calculate a Frank alpha given a tau, I'm going to go postal

I'm not taking the exam until October, so I will be watching this space in April.

The other note that I didn't mention that I thought was notable is that the exam is crafted to be "unfinishable," i.e. it is a time crunch by design, where CAS exams are time crunch by accident.

So they would have you believe

Although, to be perfectly honest, I never had a CAS exam that I didn't have enough time to review every question at least once (took them between 2002 and 2006) .

I hope the UK society will release statistics regarding pass ratios for brits vs. FCAS.
