Legless Iraq vet kills self; FBers get all sad about it

Jonathan Bartlett, an Iraq war veteran and double amputee who was featured in numerous Virginian-Pilot stories as he recovered from his injuries, died Tuesday at his home in Chesapeake. He was 27.

Family members said he killed himself.

On Sept. 25, 2004, Bartlett was a 19-year-old Army infantryman at the wheel of a Humvee outside Fallujah when it hit a homemade bomb. He lost one leg in the blast; the other was amputated soon after.

this is tragic beyond belief.

I wish I could hug each of these men and say You are loved and lovable.

find a veteran...listen to them... don't judge them... be their friend. Sounds overly simple but sometimes the simplest gestures have the most impact.

And all of the things I thought of posting in reply but didn't:

He gave it seven years. You all think he was going to find the path to inner peace in year 8, or 15, or 30?

Maybe it wasn't just his legs. I figure most of these guys with blast injuries to the legs have probably lost most or all sexual function too. Not good for a 19-year-old who probably just learned to use it.

Why not get upset at the pointless war that cost this kid and many others so much?

Can you honestly say you wouldn't do the same thing? I can't.
