I'll suggest The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach - couldn't put it down.

Not my usual type of story, but I'd be game (so to speak). Reviews seem to be all over the board from love to loathing.

It's an easy and very engaging read.

The author's style reminds me of John Irving in that it's set in his home state and his familiarity with the people/culture make it feel authentic. Also it's witty and quite hilarious. It's not self indulgent like most Irving novels though, i.e. the main character is not an author who went to Exeter. I changed my mind a few times about who the main character of the story is, as you're drawn in to several interesting subplots.

I suggest The Black Company books by Glen Close.
Sword and Sorcery from the soldiers point of view. A fairly large series but not like the Sword of Truth or Wheel of Time.

Song of Fire and Ice series (Game of Thrones) is awesome, better than the shows (3/4 through first book). Very long books but worth the time.

The Help is a very good book, great read.

The movie is just as good.

I did love "Pillars", though it's been years since I read it.
