Apparently, nothing has changed since I retired 7 years ago. No, I'm not at all surprised. Stupidity is hard to erase.

True! I had a desktop with 4GB, still running XP in office. I need to run Excel, Visual Studio, SQL Server and MATLAB. It could take over 10 minutes to open one of those monster Excel workbooks.

It only has 1 monitor.

I like to work at home!

first of all, I hate to see anybody has to deal with a ton of data daily and have hands tied to whatever IT thinks what kind of machine you need. IT always have a list of tools you can have and you can absolutely NOT choose anything outside of the list. this is b.s. The only way you can get your jobs in a much better way is to bug your boss, tell him or her that you will be a ton more efficient if you have a super powerful machine, f!ck budget, explain the benefits you will be able to provide once you got your own server at your desk. so what you need to do is come up with a huge ass sas job and tell them it takes forever to finish. not to showoff and it is not mine at home anyway, at work I have a Win7 64bit machine equipped with a cpu I7 990x extreme version (this alone cost $1025) and 24gb of ram and 4tb HDD. The reason I was able to get this machine is that I used to have a data job ran daily and it pulled data for a bunch of people, with a machine running xp 32bit, 4gb ram DDR3, and a duo core p4, the funny thing is it sometimes take up to 25 hours for a run, if it took 25 hrs to run a daily job then it is not called a daily job. so I use this as a reason to talk to my boss and purchase granted with my own selections of parts. same coding, one run usually take about 10hrs. what a big difference. Efficiency is the keyword. now go talk to your boss.

I changed boss this week ... so let's see how it goes.

But the problem will be IT policy (as usual) but with the work load coming my way because of Solvency II ... I'll climb up CFO and even CEO if it comes to that.

I completely agree it's b.s., just let us work.

Thank goodness I don't have to deal with bureaucracy any more - now I am the IT department. I have four PCs running 64-bit Windows 7, with 4, 6, 8 and 12 GB of RAM. Those smaller numbers are older laptops which are maxed out.
