Likely true. Maybe even paid as an "adjunct coach" while at school.

If she wants world class coaching as a professional, she'll need to pay the coach. If she wants enough access to an Olympic-sized pool, she'll have to pay for it. Her physical therapist and massage therapist won't work for free either.

Having said that, if she does a year or two of college she might get continued access to the college's pool for free or cheap after going pro. Her coach and other assistants would want a salary or a cut of her earnings though.

I also can't see how fun it would be for her to swim in high school or college. At some point it's like those ex-NBA players playing co-ed rec basketball... no?
The NCAA isn't a cakewalk, she'll be facing the other Olympians there. As far as high school is concerned, I don't know if she even competes in high school meets, and if she does it's surely less often than elite meets.

Phelps makes about $6M per year in endorsements... if she made 25% as much she'd be way ahead of the game. She obviously doesn't have 20+ medals but she's also not having pictures of herself doing bong hits surface on the internet.
Phelps is male, and is an outlier among outliers. She's not going to get as much as 25% of what Phelps gets. Not even 10%.

She'll do at least a year of college, by which time she'll reevaluate her options after knowing what college life is like and after seeing the available offers, and without her being a minor clouding things legally and personally.

A lot of the foreign swimmers go to college in the US so she will compete against them.

And anyway, she would swim to improve herself, to set WRs and train for world championships.

You think there aren't coaches lining up to coach her? You think they are going to ask top dollar? You think there aren't aquatic clubs that would beg for her to swim in their pools?

You think the experts estimating her losing out on up to $2M by not accepting endorsements are wrong?

She obviously wouldn't make $6M per year but she's definitely missing out on $1M plus right now. And there's no way she doesn't go pro before Rio so she's doing it for basically 2 years of college.

If that's what she wants to do... more power to her. But to make it out to be a financially sound decision is a joke.

Some experts are saying her endorsement potential isn't that high.

If she got a genuine $1M offer that isn't loaded with ifs and buts (e.g. with most of the $1M contingent on world records or winning a certain number of gold medals at world championships and the sponsor is free to drop her after year 1), she'll take it, if not now she'll sign when she turns 18. But she's not getting that much. She's getting offers that are easy to refuse. I don't think Phelps himself was making $1M back in 2004 when he won 6 golds.

I don't think you know anything about swimming economics

Good lord that looked like a nail bitter. US came back from behind three times, then scored the game winning goal in stoppage time of extra added time. Definitely going to have to find a replay of that one.

Spoiler:
I didn't watch it and I don't follow soccer, but apparently the refs provided some 'assistance' to the US team.
