Default Muscle Memory

So I had a Master Lock for when I go to the gym. I used this lock from 2002-2005. Then I lost it and I had to buy a new Master Lock.

Often though, in 2012, I will still instinctively put in the combination of my old 2002-2005 lock. I don't even think as I do it then when my lock doesn't open I get startled as I realized I was putting in the 34-16-20 from 7 years ago.

Anyone else have this experience either with combination locks or other applications?

You do know that anyone with a time machine can travel back to 2005 now and ransack your gym locker.

Yes I have had it. I can quickly enter two different combinations for former combination locks I used, one being from almost 20 years ago.

This phenomenon is universal to all activities and all animals. Especially if one has a break from it. Learn Word 2013, go on vacation, come back, revert to Word 2012. They tested it on chickens and kittens.

I do this with passwords on the Internet all the time, sometimes even thinking the spelling of the correct password to myself as I type a completely different one.

Wow, that's bizarre. I can't even remember the address I had a year ago.

I have muscle memory doing Rubik's cube. I don't remember the actual turns, but if you give me one I'll be able to do it.
