... too bad that they can't get behind our fine men and women in all of their positive accomplishments to defend our country, and by extension western civilization.

It is a sometimes unfortunate but necessary condition that, in a free society, the military must defend all citizens, regardless of their individual support of or opposition to its activities. Put less elegantly, we cannot defend the pearls without providing the same defense for the swine.

I would argue that the U.S. presence in Iraq has WEAKENED the defense of the citizens of the United States, but that's beside the point. |

In post #4 you seemed to be agreeing with the implication (from the citation in post #1) that the military is defending US citizens via its actions in Iraq.

They defended us in Korea, Nam, and now Iraq and Afghanistan (and wherever else they may be). "Defending our citizens" is not limited to shielding them from internal attack. As for Iraq, I believe that we invaded Iraq to gain a long term foothold in the Middle East-home territory of the jihadist terrorists. Very much like a chess game, only this is no mere game. I think Tony Blair hit matters right on the head when he said that we (the West) are entering into a major long term conflict of cultures. We made a major move, but unfortunately the execution has left a lot to be desired. Nevertheless, I say that our military in Iraq is defending our citizens.
