Default Suggestions on how to get affordable Healthcare?

My friend lost her job, is in her 20s and needs help getting healthcare. She cannot afford COBRA, never made much. She said she was looking on the market and it said that it would run around $300 a month with $6000? deductible. Thats to much. I thought based on nothing that there could be something for $100 a month (I have been wrong so far, and based my answer on nothing). She is trying to get another job. Any suggestions? I said to talk to an agent and ask about taking away certain coverages? She has not found those options to take away certain coverages online. She is just looking to be protected against a catastrophic event.

Any suggestions?

She could try looking for short-term coverage. Not too expensive, mainly for UNEXPECTED health issues. (That means no Rx coverage, no routine weekly physician's office visits, etc.)

Stay away from agents. Work directly with insurer for possible discount (for not having to pay agent commission).

Just looked up coverage in Ohio from Assurant: $500 deductible will run $80/mo. 180-day max.

was that just through assurant's website? I think she went through a different website that collected info from different websites.

Just learning she didn't go to the websites directly, will find out results from that. thank you.

will pass on the avoid agents.

Just remember that if she hasn't found a job by the end of the 6 months, she cannot just renew it. Then it will be time to talk to the Medicaid folks

Any carrier that markets both directly and through agents is unlikely to give a lower rate for going direct. Agents are not too keen on it, and there is little expense difference in the end anyway. I would not be so concerned about that, especially if you can get a decent reference from someone.

Is this an individual plan for a healthy person? Or a family plan for a smoker with health issues?

My guess is she just looked at a normal individual plan but agree that she needs to look for a short term policy. Just something to get her through.
