Does anyone work for this company or have interviewed with them? And can provide insight into the corporate culture, development opportunities for students, student program, etc.? Thanks in advance!

Health companies are about the same, in those regards.
I worked there a lot of numbers of years ago. What I know might not be helpful, as 90% of the people I worked with are no longer there. From what I've heard from those who have stayed, which range from "still a student" to "FSA and Vice President": 1. Corporate culture is "Do your work. Find your fun elsewhere." 2. Development opportunities are for the better and brighter (see: VP above), as the corporate structure has very few levels in actuarial. They've discovered that more actuaries are doers (see "still a student" above) than they are or will ever be managers. 3. Student program is meh. Used to be pretty nice for the average guy (me). Tilted more toward the passer now.

Thanks Dr. T No Fan, do you have any insight about how their student program actually works, in terms of students rotating/being exposed to different areas of the business?
Also, any opinions on their stability? (kind of a stupid question since they seem to be doing very well...) |

Quote:
From what I can gather, student rotation is voluntary. While WellPoint has plenty of offices, it is less likely that one would have to physically relocate. I think you'd have to stay at your first position for quite some time (two years?), as the rotation program is not for shifting around the shiftless. It is for the future businesspersons of the company. And rotators have to teach their replacements how to do the work. WellPoint is well diversified, both in geography and in the health business areas (ind, small gp, large gp, jumbo gp, gov't, etc.). Diversification helps during down times of one slice of the business, as another will carry the load. They are as stable as health care reform will allow it. As is every other health insurance company.
