A Westfield woman, who officials say beat her 11-year-old adopted daughter so severely that the girl is ''virtually brain dead," was found shot to death along with the girl's grandmother yesterday in a West Springfield home less than a day after the mother had been released on bail, authorities said.

Police found the bodies of Holli A. Strickland, 33, and Constance Young in Young's home yesterday morning, only hours after Strickland was released on bail Wednesday night on charges of assault and battery on a child with substantial injuries, according to Hampden District Attorney William M. Bennett. Officials believe the deaths were a double suicide or a homicide-suicide, Bennett said in a statement.

Prosecutors said Hallie was subjected to abuse by her mother and occasionally her stepfather for an unknown period, during which she was beaten with a baseball bat, pushed down stairs, forced to stand in scalding water, and kicked repeatedly.

Personally, I think she took the easy way out.

One of my fears about having kids is they're going to have to grow up with kids with parents like this. If those kids actually live to grow up, that is.

Throwing out the unlikely double suicide for a minute, is it more likely the evil daughter killed the mother and then herself, or was the mother so digusted and ashamed of what her daughter did that she killed her own daughter, then killed herself in remorse?

A Long Island mother has pleaded guilty to second-degree rape for providing a Westchester hotel room and liquor so her 13-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old friend could have sex with two young men they had just met.

The woman, whose name is being withheld to protect her daughter's identity, allegedly told investigators it was time for her daughter to "have sex and get it over with."

The Sayville woman took the girls to White Plains for an overnight shopping trip in April. The girls ran into the men - ages 18 and 19, - at a mall, and the men came to the girls' room at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

The mother admitted Wednesday in Westchester County Court that she was with them in the room when the sex occurred. Judge Rory Bellantoni said he would sentence the woman to six months in jail and 10 years' probation. Rape charges against the men are pending.

MY GUESS IS THE GRANDMOTHER WAS THE POSSIBLE HOMICIDE. THE FACT STRICKLAND DIED IN THE AMBULANCE ON THE WAY TO THE HOSPITAL WOULD LEAD ME TO BELIEVE SHE WAS LAST TO GET SHOT. MAYBE THE GRANDMOTHER WAS THE UNNAMED WITNESS. WHO KNOWS.

I think the latter. The mother probably blamed herself for what happened, either for having raised such a monster, or for allowing this to have happened.
