Lightbulb New Social Groups: Civil Disagreement and Uncivil Agreement

I just made two new social groups, predominantly focused on politics and social theory... so if you're interested, give them a go.

Civil Disagreement

This group is moderated, but at the moment, anyone who wants in can join. I'm the ruler of this group though, and I'm going for a pretty strict civility requirement - including from me, and I expect to be called out if I get out of line too. I'd like this to be a place where posters can discuss potentially sensitive topics while being respectful of each other. Some topics get hairy, and some are complicated. Some people feel very strongly. All of that is fine... as long as you stay civil about it. Pretend these are close family members or coworkers that you want to maintain a good relationship with . And if I decide that you're being too unruly, I will kick you out!

Uncivil Agreement

This is the flip side to Civil Disagreement, but is currently a Public group, so anyone who wants to join should be able to without needing my say so (I hope). Still the same overall focus on politics and social theory... but with a very hands-off approach. Say what you want, be as blatant and honest as you want. I don't care what your opinions or your views are. You can be as mean or nice, as malicious or generous as you want to be. But don't expect any kind of back-up on this either. If you think someone is a racist or a bigot, go ahead and say it... but DO NOT expect that they'll be infracted or moderated in any fashion from anything they've said in the social group. It's also intended as a place where posters who have very contentious relationships can go ahead and air their views with each other without crapping up AO Political. So if Bernie and Ito want to get into it... this is a really great place for it.

Be warned however: These are essentially experimental groups. My hope is that it will help the mods keep AO Political in better shape, with fewer banhammers over all. But that comes with the expectation that both of these groups have "Vegas" Rules - what happens in the groups stays in the groups. If it starts spilling over into the board, I will nuke it from orbit without hesitation. If I get word from the mods that they think it's spilling over, I will slag the whole thing. So please feel free to let it all hang out... but learn how to compartmentalize while you're at it.

With that introduction and invitation - please join in!

So . . . who is going to enforce "civility" in the discourse?

Intriguing ideas!

But, if your hope is to clean up AO Political ... why would the Civil Disagreement board be necessary? Isn't that essentially what you're trying to make the AO Political subforum to be? If so, that's just redundant, right?

I can't imagine the Uncivil going well. Either it will get ugly, or it will turn into an echo chamber. If the former, I'm not sure how you avoid it spilling over here. But it's an interesting experiment.

I joined both just to see what would happen. I think the uncivil one won't work because the wrong posters will join it.

How is this narcissism? Seems like helena lake made some social groups to talk politics because she was banned from political and therefore cant do that there anymore.

You dont have to join.
