Qualcomm just developed a new chipset that probably won't be hitting the market for a few months. Its definitely not the time to buy a smartwatch.

The Pixel 2 arguably has a better camera than the iPhone X, though really the cameras on all the premium phones these days are so good it's hard to tell the difference

Nicer screen and camera on the Xs is a plus, but thats a heck of a premium to pay for it. I have a 7 and probably will stick it out another year unless there is a ridiculously good trade in offer. I took the free upgrade from the 6S and would do something similar again if offered. Not interested in shelling out 1k for a phone.

When deciding what phone to get, the first question is: What does everyone around you use? They are your tech support, so get whatever they have.

If you decide to get an Android, only get a Pixel. All other Android is garbage. Pixel cameras are arguably better than iPhone cameras. Also, no bloatware and regular, immediate updates.

Credentials: I repair iPhones for a living and am an Android poweruser.

Yeah, sad to see how expensive this technology is getting, but it makes sense given the increased hardware requirements. At least the Xs is released at same price as the X was, and other models are getting prices lowered.

This is very true too. My first smartphone was the Droid X, since that was the best Android at the time, and I just stuck with droids since I was comfortable (Droid Turbo and Z Force), but not as satisfied with them as I thought I would be. I'd definitely go Pixel if I stick with Android, and I think the Xs if I switch to iOS.

I agree the Apple Watch seems superior to android offerings. That said, I haven't had an iPhone since the iPhone 3.

I've been iPhone curious as I find android can be a bit... wonky... I love the customization but get weird issues like the Spotify widget not working.

Pixel seems like a great compromise, and I'm waiting for the Pixel 3 announcement.

I use an iPhone and it's fine. That's all I want. Fine.

They did that dumbass demo where the three phones link up and the millennials played 3D space invaders in augmented reality though. I'm just sitting there like, "Can you just make one that doesn't freeze up when checking email after two years of use?"

So anyway, I'll probably get the R. Or maybe just an iPhone 8.

The short list

Ended up ordering an Xs for my wife, since she'll benefit a lot from the camera and whatnot. I'll see how it feels, but at this point I'm thinking I might get an Xr. I'm just not sure if I'd regret getting the slightly lower end model every time I see hers.
