7 teams make it and now the playoffs are just single games? Bleh. Was hoping to catch a Red Bulls game at home but it's very likely they won't have any... Home and away too much for US soccer fans?

The unbalanced schedule requires playoffs. Two-game knockout would be fairest, but hard to schedule. They've tried that in the past. There are two international dates during the MLS playoff season. That makes scheduling difficult. In the past, the MLS Cup final was held after the November break. That, evidently, is too late.
But, yeah, seven from each conference is too much, IMO, if you want two-game knockouts. Four might be the right amount.

Aside:
One would expect to see some analysis on number of teams, number of games, number of in-conference games, etc. for any sport to determine an objective number of playoff teams. Need an actuary. Is there an actuary in the house?

Also: "Decision Day" is a stupid name for last matches of the season.

I thought it was fine when it was like 5 or 6 teams from each conference and the 1st round was single game but then the conference semis and finals were both home and away. 7 teams in is too many, makes the regular season almost meaningless and a single game result in soccer is too random. If you're going to make the regular season mostly meaningless (like NBA or NHL) then you need to make the playoffs less random not more random.

Agreed. They could work something out such that in ten years, there will be a MLS A League with 20 teams and a 38-match schedule with no playoffs, played in the normal soccer season, and an MLS B League. And other things we cannot discuss here.

Ten years are required, so that the current owners can decide what to do with their teams.

Also, this would come about a lot more quickly if Liga MX and MLS merge. Then, there is a shitload of teams and no way to have that many in a "top tier."

There's a write up on the MLS website about the new playoff format. The main justification for a 14 team playoff seems to be because the plan is to expand to 24 teams by 2022. That seems to suggest that they want some continuity to the playoff structure for the next few years. They also compare the number of teams making the playoffs to the NBA and NHL, which both have more than 50% making the playoffs.

I think there are two goals for the playoffs from the league's perspective. Overall excitement and determining the best team. I think the home-and-home approach, while clearly the best method for finding the best team, received a lot of complaints for producing very boring soccer. The first game often produced very cagey, defensive strategies, especially from inferior teams. Many of the series didn't really take off until second half of the second game. That's not how I feel about it, I personally like the strategic elements presented by that structure, but I've seen a lot (an absolute TON) of casual fans complain about it. They either don't understand why it's only two games (instead of 1 or 3), don't understand the away goals rule, or just don't like the product.

Playoffs start tomorrow

Not sure what they are trying to do with the spacing of the schedule. Trying to make the 1st round bye mean more with a quick turnaround? Or just getting the games off the weekend so there will be more eyes/coverage?

Sat/Sun Oct 19-20 First Round
Wed/Thu Oct 23-24 Second Round
Tue/Wed Oct 29-30 Conference Finals
Sun Nov 10 Final

Also just 4 of the 6 games are shown nationally on cable (I guess 5 if you want to count the game on Univision).

Atlanta/Revs 12:00 Univision
Sounders/Dallas 2:30 FS1
Toronto/DC 5:00 local TV only (ESPN+???)
RSL/Portland 9:00 ESPNNews

Philly/NYRB 2:00 FS1
Minny/LAFC 7:30 ESPN

I think they're trying to get it in before the next International Break, which starts 11/11.
And yes, too much Murican fuhbaw on the weekends.

Fun weekend of soccer, except for the last game.
