New phone every 9-12 months, mainly because of changing providers -- sometimes because the signal quality sucked, other times because another provider offered more data and/or talk time for the same price or lower.

Those phones were all under $100 each. I don't run games or other taxing apps on my phone, so the sub-$100 class of phones has been sufficient for my needs of basic web browsing, GPS, taking photos, and making calls.

But now that I've returned to Verizon, and resumed using the same phone I had with Verizon 2 years ago, its relatively weak CPU and 1GB of RAM sometimes gets bogged down with some web sites when multiple tabs are open. And with the degradation of my middle-aged eyes I could use a bigger screen than 4.5 inches. So now I've upped my budget to $200 and will soon buy something with a minimum of 2GB and 5" screen.

2-3 years with $300-$400 phones. I use it a lot, but I'd rather watch TV/play games on something else.

Last one lasted 4 years, then the battery was just too shot. I think I could get $50 for it, so it's sitting in a drawer in case I have some future use for it.

Well, last night my phone went into an endless boot loop, until I plugged it in.

Thinking I'm getting a new phone, soon. Probably the pixel 1 or the moto x4.

I'm in a 5 cell phone family, so I gotta stretch phones out. Rule of thumb is 4 years, unless phone failure accelerates this at all. 2 kids got new iphone 8's to replace the iphone 5S's they had from Xmas 2013. Phones really aren't worth selling after 48 months of use. Generally, with a proper impact resistant case, the iphones stand up well for 4 years.

I am 3 years into my LG G3 Android. I'll try to make it through 2018 without replacing it. I don't really use apps much on my phone, mostly talk & text, so I don't need to have the latest or greatest. I have an ipad for apps, that suits me fine.

I don't base it really on time, but on if there are new features/quality I want/need or the phone just needs replacing. That comes to around 3 to 4 years. Four phones since 2007, all iPhones.
