Default HDMI to USB

Question for all you video experts.

My laptop doesn’t have HDMI out. Looking on amazon for a cable, and there are a bunch in $10 – 15 range, and a bunch in the $45 range. The difference seems to be (from what I am reading) is that the cheap ones don’t "convert", but the expensive ones do.

What does that mean? Do I need conversion? When I would use it, 90% it's for hookup to a projector for PowerPoint, and the rest for movies to my TV or projector

The first you linked to is a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, not USB to HDMI. If your laptop has a DisplayPort connection (D with a P inside and two + to the left logo), then go with the first. Otherwise find whatever display connection (DVI, VGA, etc) your laptop does have and get the adapter that's right for it. USB to HDMI is a hassle, so only use that if your laptop is a superthin with no other ports.

For under $200 you can get a refurbished laptop from Newegg with HDMI or DisplayPort. Under $150 if you look on eBay. You'll get smoother video performance than USB, and you'd be able to leave the laptop always connected to the projector, while continuing to use your existing laptop for other day-to-day purposes.
