Default Which Xbox?

My 13yo wants an Xbox for his birthday, so he can play games online with his friends. (He has a PS4 now.)

What is the best value? I see the Xbox One 4K is very expensive. He doesn't think he needs one, and could settle for a "regular" Xbox One. But now I see the "One S" model and I'm just confused what to get.

He has absolutely nothing in the Xbox family. So, thoughts on how to get him started?

I see that Costco has the following bundle for $249.

Xbox One S 500GB Bundle with 3-month Xbox Live Card, 3-month Game Pass and Extra Controller

Not even he is pushing for the high end model, so don't bother with it.

However, 500GB will mean running out of space in no time, so get a 1TB model unless you're planning to add an external hard drive (must be USB 3.0) soon.
