MIT Technology Review talks semi-regularly about AV technology, including LIDAR and the struggle to get the right resolution at higher speeds at a viable cost. Their latest is interesting:

By 2019, GM plans to produce self-driving cars without steering wheels and pedals, and deploy them as taxis:

quick tip, invest in the suburbs now. city real estate will start trending downward while suburban real estate will begin a huge bubble

if your 1.5 hour commute is self-driving, many people won't mind living out in the boondocks
