I heard one of the things the players were complaining about was how different the course could be based on when your tee time was. The article I read said the worst case scenario was having played Thursday afternoon, Friday morning and Saturday afternoon.

The article indicated that they had let the course get fairly fast (hard as in like concrete) on Saturday and then the wind kicked up and the afternoon played like concrete. They had a tweet from the USGA pres or something saying he wished they could have taken a mulligan and treated the course differently so it would not have been like it was on Saturday afternoon.

So while everyone played the same course and weather is going to make things different but the way the USGA decided to try to make things more difficult for the best golfers in the world, made it into a comedy/tragedy.

The Saturday wind was a surprise to the USGA - their already difficult course was nigh unplayable by the afternoon. Early tee-offs had a much easier track that day.

I like Open carnage but Saturday wasn't carnage, it was poor. Can't have sandy greens at 14. Oakmont is intended to have super fast greens. Shinnecock is not. Neither is Saint Andrews. Grow the rough and let the greens be fast but manageable. Heavy rough is more fairly punitive than losing control of the greens....again.

Yes you sure can have sandy greens. And Shinnecock can have fast greens. They all putt on the same greens. The pearl clutching is ridiculous
