Default Actuary - Florida Office of Insurance Regulation

The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation currently has two open positions:

(1) Reserving Actuary with the Life & Health Financial Oversight Unit; and
(2) Pricing Actuary with the Life & Health Product Review Unit

Both actuaries will be expected to perform complex actuarial work including auditing and reviewing company mathematical assumptions, applying Florida Statutes and Rules, and meeting with company representatives as well as represent the Office before state and national stakeholders.

Requirements: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in mathematics, statistics, risk management or insurance and professional actuarial experience. Must be a member of the Society of Actuaries and must be in good standing with the Society of Actuaries, holding the designation of ASA or FSA.

Brief Description of Duties Reserving Actuary:
• Analyze the adequacy of health claim reserves using loss development methods.
• Monitor legislative activity at the federal and state levels.
• Review actuarial certifications for compliance with Florida Statutes and Rules.
• Analyze Office financial examinations and make recommendations for changes in liabilities.
• Review reinsurance contracts for compliance and reasonability.

Brief Description of Duties Pricing Actuary:
This position performs complex actuarial work related to the review and analysis of some life and predominately health insurance rate filings. Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Determining appropriateness of rates filed with the Office, and in ensuring compliance with Florida Statutes and Rules.
• Serves on state and national insurance committees, task forces, and other projects.
• Serves as actuarial consultant on the impact of legislative changes, reviews proposed legislation and develops revisions of statutes.
• Works with companies to ensure the accuracy and completeness of rate filings.
