Default Annoying changes in Google Maps

I don't believe I am imagining this, but I seem to recall years back Google Maps used to say "In 1000 feet, turn left on Main Street". Consistent, reliable, always the same. Distance, direction, street name.

Now, Google Maps will sometimes say "In 1000 feet, turn left." Or sometimes, "After Burger King, turn left." Or worst of all, "Turn left." Has anyone noticed this, and is anyone else as irritated as I am that they changed the old way?

I get the simpler "turn left" a lot, especially if the turn is very close after a previous turn. Never have gotten any Burger King (or any other landmark) reference points.

I just got a landmark turn instruction the other day. Not wild about it. I want to look at the road, not at unfamiliar landmarks.

I don't have a compass on my maps screen anymore. Is there still a way to toggle between up=North and up=direction of travel?

Yes, but it's too many clicks to do it while driving. It's now buried in the preferences or something. That bugs me, too.

Yeah, the time I got that, I'm pretty sure it was a right turn and I had actually turned onto the next road and glanced to my right and realized that the restaurant google had mentioned was right there. I didn't notice it before turning.
