if you share a bag, i'm assuming it's not going to be carry-on.

I don't like to lug around anything larger than that.
A carryon works for most trips, but not a ten day one. I have ten shirts, underwear, a few pairs of jeans, a couple pj pants (I just wear the shirt from the day overnight, saves on pj shirts), two pairs of Rothy's, which basically take up no space, ten pairs of socks, my face wash kit, my makeup bag, and a few other odds and ends.

It is not.

I am also not going to risk bringing a carryon bag since my first fight is a cramped commuter flight and I’d most likely be forced to check it to my final destination. So, no thanks to that. I just bring an overnight bag that fits under my seat and has my knitting, a change of clothes, and a bottle of face wash to refresh before we land.

It looks like the one bag mission worked. And we still have room for some small gifts for the kids.

They gate-check for little planes. I don't worry about that like I do the stuff that might get separated from the plane.

Anyway, congrats on packing successfully.

ah, i normally fly direct and don't fly international. i can see it being more advantageous to just check a bag if you're not doing that.

If you're paying to check luggage then one large suitcase probably costs less than two smaller ones. (I don't usually have to worry about that as I mostly fly on the airline where I have status... but I know that others try to save $$$ this way.)

There were times where we were traveling a lot by buses etc to see as much as we could, so we packed light, with clothes that are easy to wash in the sink. Also this wasn't in the winter

Our flight is in four hours and we are at the airport.

BUT, itís a foreign international airport so I have no idea how long it will take to get through check-in, so is that SO crazy? The airport recommended 2 hours for domestic travel and up to six hours for international.
