Default Real Estate Comp site

Anyone out there know of a hassle free site which would provide recent real estate sales in a specific area? I did some searching this morning but most everything I found required a subscription, gave limited information, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

You might try the newspaper in the area - The LA Times prints recent sales every week (?)

The tribune web site has sales information in greater Chicago. But generally, I haven't found this kind of knowledge in, say... Indianapolis.

If it helps, I'm interested in Eastern Pennsylvania (Chester County to be specific).

Also, what I'm hoping to find is something I can search based on some set of criteria (Square Footage, lot size, # bedrooms, etc) and have it return a listing of the most recent sales (similar to what's contained in a RE appraisal). I'm trying to a good estimate of my property value without having to pay for an appraisal (at least not yet).

What town/county agency records deeds?

Here if FL--Brevard County, anyway--it's the County Clerk. On the website you can find all sorts of info on recent sales (2 years, I think) such as sales price, taxes, prior sales, etc.

Just my $.02
