There is a thread in political, actually.

Unless I'm missing something, I think there is an error in your math.

All 3 should not have moved in the same direction?

You are missing something. My original calculations were based on incomplete vote totals.

In all three new "states", the missing votes skewed Democratic.

It wasn't that votes were moving from one state to the other because I'd mischaracterized a county... Politico has incomplete vote totals on their site.

2012 POTUS election results in CA
Politico
Barack Obama: 6,493,924
Mitt Romney: 4,202,127

Dave Leip
Barack Obama: 7,854,285
Mitt Romney: 4,839,958

Assuming that Dave Leip is right and Politico is wrong... Politico is shorting Obama more than they are shorting Romney. Across the board. The change is what happened when I switched my source from Politico to Dave Leip.

I think they're discussing the political aspect of this because that is the only way it is going to get approved. If the party in power takes a shine to the political ramifications of splitting up CA, then it has a chance. Otherwise it's DOA.

Correct. (At least for me, anyway.) Pretty impossible to discuss potential legislation intelligently without bringing politics into it.

That's because we answered your simple question in the OP pretty quickly.

Well, if you want to move the discussion in that direction, you could respond to the people who have expressed opinions (DTNF and me, at least) with agreement, disagreement, follow-on questions, or really anything at all.

Alternatively, take no action at all to get the result you want and just hope for the best, I guess.
