Default Recent ASA Resume

Looking for feedback on my resume. I recently obtained ASA this year.

Any comments/critiques are greatly appreciated.

I think you should highlight or bullet the software and programs you've used under Technical Skills more clearly. I'd then move the statement of what you did with the software to your work experience section for health insurance company.

I'd probably put some hard accomplishments and make it relevant to your knowledge of your insurer's financials under your experience bullets. it will show that you're not passive but was active in strengthening your department.

I think you should add at least one bullet for any other non-actuarial jobs you plan to put on your resume. if you think it's not important to describe then don't put it on there. maybe you don't need both math teacher positions?

I'd also add a plug for myperfectresume.com

there's so many bland looking resumes out there. yeah, you have to pay, but its worth it in my opinion. this is your future. that website has really good formatting that can make you stand out and look like a professional in stack of similar looking resumes.

Tons to comment on this:

Are you not sitting for FSA exams? I can already see you're an ASA from your name. The whole exam section is wasted space. I'd rather see progress towards FSA even if it's just the date you plan to sit. Planning on being a career ASA, I'd rather just see nothing here.

Experience: What you have is fine, but I'd rather see more information here. I already know you're an ASA this is your chance to show me your real expertise. The size 10 font also makes this harder to read. After changes below you should have space to share a lot more details and to pick a bigger font.

Other employment. You could probably just throw these on a list that would waste only one line. Nobody cares about the dates or actual schools. Something like:

Other Work Experience: Mathematics Teacher, claims representative, sales support.

What the hell is a "Actuarial Science Certificate", seems like wasted space.

I like that you kept your GPA since high, but I really want to see a date range, also you could fit each on two lines. I don't really care about the split between math GPA and regular GPA. Once again this should be two lines not 4.

Honors section is fine.

Technical skills: If you did a lot of work in R and VBA I'd sell this more. Both in this section and more importantly in your bullets. I would move the technical skills above education, but opinions may vary and it's not the worst where it is.

I know it should seem obvious but you better not be sending as a word doc.

Lastly: are you MAAA? I should see that somewhere.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. Really helpful feedback.

For the FSA exams:

If I am planning on starting or am currently working on an FSA module, would it be beneficial to list something like:

FSA Module In Progress

Thanks again!

Ya, that's probably ok. I'd rather see the date you plan on sitting for your next exam, since modules are an after thought, but if you're taking it easy and just doing modules people should get that.
